I have never had food poisoning from foods I have taken home from places - as long as one does it sensibly - ie not leave them in a hot car for ages, I think risk is very minimal
My friends who took food home from Cracker Barrel didn't get food poisoning either. They just threw up most of the next day and pooped, so no big deal - it was just something minimal - they lived through it, and enjoyed the added bonus of saving money by not wasting food, like more money in the pocket!
Thanksgiving isn't far off; everyone will have plenty of food to take home. If my cousins invite me this Thanksgiving, I'll probably go, and I will thank them for offering me leftovers when I leave to go home, while at the same time, politely declining. I don't want a minimal risk of food poisoning, I don't want the same food 2 days in a row, and I don't want the inside of my car smelling like a big f*rt all the way home.
Edited to add this paragraph:
In 2023, Thannksgiving, I took a rather expensive cheesecake to my cousin's. Instead of refrigerating it (yes they had room in the refrigerator) my cousin's wife sat it on a buffet table with all the regular desserts where it sat for 5 total hours. I noticed part of it was still left. Needless to say, someone ate the rest later, or took it home.
