What is the Point of Life

God put you on this earth to do certain things. As you age you do help people, animals & whatever is called for. When you have accomplished all that he put you on this earth to do you will be called home. Then everyone will remember what you have done for them.

This was told to me by an old farmer when I was a kid, as I asked him how he will be remembered? I still remember all the good things he taught me.

I like your poem. When my mother, who was the very spirit of generosity, was suffering from dementia and being cared for in a quite wonderful facility my daughter and my sister's daughter would go to visit her and take their dogs with them. They would take Mum to a park, set the dogs free and lay out an afternoon tea to share.

My daughter said to me that her grandmother's last gift to her was that she brought her closer to her cousin. So without knowing how we affect people we need to trust in the idea that every day that we are alive we are giving something of ourselves away to others. The purpose of our lives is to give generously of ourselves by loving and being loved. The purpose of life is love. It always has been.
Beautiful story, and wonderfully said, Warrigal! :)

It seems we all get born, we grow to adults, we get old and suffer a lot with all kinds of illnesses. Then we die and totally disappear. Is there any meaning to it all?
Personally I don't really think there is a point. We're just here to propogate the species, I guess, to what end I don't know. Very, very few of us will have any lasting effect on the world
We're really no different than that ant you stepped on on the way into the house

A biology professor in collage made the statement that as a 'living being' our only observable purpose is to procreate. Along with that thought I would add; Life is our chance to create something of meaning, just as our Creator had.

I don't know if it is the "point" But IMO life should be enjoyed just as much as possible, without intentionally hurting anyone along the way.

Some folks of course feel the need to make & leave their mark along the way. And that is terrific, just try not to step on anyone , on the way up.

I don't dispute your point about some 50 year olds or even some older than 50. Some people just don't "get it" and likely never will. But some questions have no answers and I agree that the questions of a 7 year old should be acknowledged but answered in terms a 7 year can grasp. I think that's why there are things called stages of development.
Whatever Chris !! 😂👍

The executive control or pilot or doer in all DNA organic Earth mortal creatures above that of worms including we human Earth monkeys, are complex electromagnetic fields within nervous systems of their organic bodies. Each creature's executive control has a primary innate purpose of living that means guiding their body's path to remaining alive not dying and a secondary purpose of supporting the further existence of their species that includes reproduction.

Among the myriad types of life species there are no life species that seek death before being able to reproduce. What remaining alive entails varies enormously say between an ant's simple life and a very complex human being. With humans, we are the only species that as sub-category of remaining alive if one has a religious belief in meaningful eternal life, also has a purpose of attaining that infinite eternal life.

The point of life is to find our purpose, and we all have a purpose or we wouldn't still be here.
Then, the point of life is to do the best we can to fulfill our purpose.

Our striving for the best is all that is expected...we don't have to be perfect...no worries.
The point is to not give up until it's our time...and until our purpose is finished in our Creators eyes.

"..nature has not singled out humans for special treatment, and human beings are not the most recently evolved species on the planet in any event. That last honor, if it can be viewed as such, would likely belong to a virus, a bacterium, or another micro-organism, since their short generation times allow them to evolve, almost literally, in the blink of an eye. Humans are no more of an end point to evolution than they are its most recent product."

For me there is nothing to gain or loose in life. Any claim to such is short lived, and evanescent. But the discovery of every fresh new moment is mostly interesting, sometimes scary, sometimes thrilling.
I disagree with the first sentence. What we can gain in life is limited only by our motivation to obtain it, and what we have to lose is life itself.

What's the point of Life? A person's life is pointless if s/he has no responsibility. I'm talking about the long list of responsibilities that being a member of a society thrusts upon us, such as keeping your car insured, as well as the responsibilities that we chose to take on, such as raising a family. Both types of responsibility are rife with challenges and stress, but the ones we choose to take on are usually more personally meaningful and satisfying.

People who go through life without any responsibility whatsoever are not only living pointless lives, I think, at the end of the day, they are probably far less satisfied with life than people who willingly accept some responsibility, even if it's only responsibility for themselves.

Once a person propagates, unlike an ant, doesn't that person have a responsibility to guide their progeny to adulthood? And isn't that the point?
