What is your ancestral background if I may ask?

What is your ancestral background? My grandparents came from what is now called Slovakia and the Czech Republic. My one grandmother claimed she was born in Budapest, Hungary. My brother looked up our whole family and said that wasn't true. I tend to believe my grandmother, she had no reason to lie. Our DNA goes way way back and we are from Asia, Japan, and Africa. I guess that is where my family was from originally.

I've traced family to Ireland (counties Cork and Kerry) and England (Norfolk), and family says Germany and Wales. I have a probable Scottish maiden name for an Irish ancestor but haven't yet proven where she came from. My maiden name is Welsh and my mom's maiden name is English. I'm a mutt.

Welsh as far back as I can go. My first name, a family name, was first recorded in 1315. On my mother's side we were associated with Flatford Mill, but whether before or after Constable I don't know/

Maternal grandmother's family left Russia, during a revolution, and settled in the Italian Alps. Do not know any previous history. Paternal ancestors originated in Monaco, left due to some political upheaval. Immigrated to Italy. First Sicily, then settled in Como. I always questioned the origin of my maiden name (Lomonaco) How could I be the descendant of a monk? After a son researched our history I discover in actuality it referred to Monaco not a monk. Despite this my family always considered themselves pure Italian.
Have considered doing a DNA research. Has anyone had one done? If so, was it expensive?

I've done it but I'm highly doubtful of the results. And the results are too general - western Europe. Uh huh. About $100.

Mother's side, half Dutch (Zuid Holland).

Father's side, his dad said "the British Isles" so going by their kids' names I'm thinking Wales and maybe England. Pretty definitely Irish (Ulster) from Huguenots fleeing France. That was our Crockett branch (not Davy).

Only one genealogy book ever listed our surname, but there are at least two Revolutionary War vets with the name, so I know it existed at least 200 years ago. I think it's from Old English; the book said Scandinavian, could be both.

German and Czech on my Mother's side and all German with a touch of French on my Father's side. The Czech on my Mother's side was traced to Prague. Any records about the German side were lost in the war.

Had my DNA tested recently by 23andme. $100. Aside from the 2.7% Neanderthal, I'm totally northern European (Irish/Scotland/German/Finland) which is consistent with the research done on both grandfathers and my maternal grandmother by my cousins. But just chasing back the paternal line (last name) we've been Americans since mid to late 1700s.

I see such a variety of ancestry. There are a few that have similar origins to me, too. Very interesting! :) I almost forgot that we are also Bohemian and a little German.

Both sides of my parents families were from Naples,Italy. So I am 100% Italian. My Husband is 100% Irish. So my children are half and half. My cousin on my Dad's side did all the research on my Fathers family and my Husbands Brother did all their families research. I do wish that someone would do more research on my Mother's family. I enjoy reading it,but am too lazy to check into it myself.

Berwick on Tweed is charming. I believe it was part of Scotland/England/Scotland several times.

I believe historically they've battled over it...but yeah.

Hubby is second generation Sicilian.

Mother's side:
mainly two families that immigrated from the Swiss+ French areas bordering Germany into Germany. They made their way to the America in the mid 18th century. g-g-grandfather Irish, but no sign of a significant line there.

Father's side:
Paternal grandmother's line well documented back to original immigrant, from Germany.
Paternal grandfathers line less certain, was originally thought to be German, but there are possible Welsh connections.

My daughter traced my side to folks from the south of England who came over on the ship Hercules in 1634.

My wife's mother's people came from France to Quebec in the 1700s. Her father came from a Greek island in the Aegean. They met in night school learning better English.

Thank you all for sharing about your ancestry. I enjoyed reading it. :)
