What is your view of enlightenment?

I am using the word "enlightenment" to refer to more of a spiritual experience or state, rather than a revised view of topics, situations, or social matters.
To some it may be spiritual nonsense because they have never experienced it. Yet to others it is the pinnacle of all human experiences.
The basis or foundation underlying the experience is that there is a higher self that is the part of you that is unencumbered by ego.
It’s the non-material dimension of you (some call it a soul or spirit) that's part of a larger cosmic consciousness, or at least a celestial whole.

The experience of meditation can lead one to a stillness and a sanctuary where the ripples in the pond created by thinking, settle into a placid and calm inner dimension of existence where you let go of everything that is not in the moment. There is a bliss of inner peace that settles over you, almost as an out-of-body experience, filled with deep contentment. Perhaps you finally understand the true nature of what you are and your oneness with something beyond yourself.

It is claimed that becoming enlightened is like entering into a whole new realm that begins to change you from the inside out. It begins to change your values and priorities. It changes your perception of what's around you. It changes your mindset, your moods, your inner peace, how you face challenges, and gives you new direction in life. You are now on a different quest or path that is so different from the one that has been imprinted on your brain by our culture and society.

What are your views or experiences?
I suspect that most of these encounters are largely interpreted by one's belief system, meaning that the experience may be strikingly similar to those reported by others, but one may view it as a divine experience, and yet another as a oneness with the cosmos. Perhaps the actual experience is more important than the label we put on it.

These words from your OP are a fundamental truth about the topic:
" ...the actual experience is more important than the label we put on it." And more meaningful than anything anyone else has to say about our experiences, tho talking about such things in non judgemental company can productive sometimes.

i came to this thread hopeful for some interesting comments and exchanges as usual on your posts. But like politics and religion, spirituality is topic many people seem incapable of discussing rationally, civilly. Such people are so set in their own world view, so rigid in their beliefs, so tied to their ideas either that this material world is all there is or that the teachings of their dogma of choice is the only way to be spiritual that the discussion devolves.

i have talked about my spirituality, journey toward enlightenment many times on SF. Consider myself a work in progress, still learning. You can look up those posts (and comments on other's posts on related topics) on my profile page. You can reply to my comments on those threads or open a conversation as they call them here, a PM, if you have comments or questions about anything i've said.

This is why i was absent for a long stretch earlier this year. While i treasure some of the folks here i have to scroll by many posts or just go thru and react to the comments i can relate to because there are very few things that i think important enough to argue with anyone over (bigotry, domestic violence, the welfare of children) and those things often border on, are impacted by politics.

Spirituality is a very personal thing, while i'm always happy to support people who are exploring personal growth issues; Make suggestions about various sources of info, or practices i've found helpful i have no desire to talk anyone out of their beliefs or to push mine on them.

My view on enlightenment is that when enlightened, the inner light within us is awakened. It will transform how we live, how we think, how we act. It will make one understand that we are all one, all interconnected, all equal in the ocean of consciousness.
