What Motivates a Terrorist ?

Defenders of Islam like to compare all mass shootings and violence as terrorist acts and refer to the perpetrators as TERRORISTS. If they are not Muslim they ARE NOT TERRORISTS they are Psychologically impaired. The motivation of the Muslim Terrorist has a religious foundation.

One recent example of domestic terrorism in America, carried out by extreme rightwing Christian: Jewish Community Centre
murders. April 23, 2014, Glenn Miller opened fire at Jewish Community Centre and Jewish retirement community, killing three
people. Miller was founder and former leader of Carolina Knights of KKK, and white Patriots of Power. He identified as Christian.

Ha---I would have bet $100 that you would be the first to respond Shali. I don't believe anti semitism is religious based. Further, I suspect that all KKK members are mentally impaired.

Sooo, anyone with a religious affiliation other than Muslim is not a terrorist? What about right wing Christians who bomb abortion clinics? Certainly religious based. It could be argued, (and by many mental health professionals is,) that all terrorists suffer from some type of psychological impairment. I am interested in how you differentiate?

There are zillions of people devout in whatever faith they believe, who would never consider killing anyone. But free will and there are a bunch of nut jobs out there. It's about not connecting a religion to motives. These loose cannons kill and try to use religion as a blanket. The headlines and all shouldn't pander to it. You shot those people because you are a murderer...not because you are Muslim/Christian/Jewish...whatever the heck you're pretending to be...no faith promotes bloodshed.

You are really stretching it. I think most people in this world today think of terrorism & terrorists in a fifferent vein than you choose to use.

Really, not the Canadianim. We are committed to accepting twenty five thousand Syrian refugees within the next couple of months. I will be working with some of them. I think many people would find your take on terrorism Islamophobic in the extreme. Whew, you are patronising my friend.

I thought of an analogy. There are indeed people who put all Muslims under the label of potential terrorist. But it's like my baby boy...there are some people who label dogs who have even just the appearance of "Pit Bull" as killing machines, heck they get worse press than sharks. As I type this Callie is curled like a cat in my daughter's lap, snoring and farting peacefully. My Dad would insist he's just waiting for the right time to attack. Same idea...

Any religion or organization can have lone wolves or those who act on their own initiative. What puzzles me with many of the recent crop of Muslim terrorists is that several have made overseas trip, seem to have gotten actual training and/or became hardliners or radicals.

Does one already have to be an active practitioner of the faith so they just need nudging or are they flat out brainwashed. Just like many a cult member I think the extremist is already 'looking' for something in which radical islamic teaching fits the bill. But unlike a cult member I would think the prerequisites are little tougher ie working knowledge of Islam. My guess is that their "recruiters" are like predators and know exactly what they are looking for pouncing on any recruit/opportunity. This probably happens online as well. It

I am quite aware that not all Muslims are of terrorist persuasion, but also aware that some can be recruited to a more radical position, so that make Islamaphobic? Me, patronizing?

Some terrorists who were neither Muslim nor mentally impaired. They all had an agenda that was rational and used terrorist tactics to pursue their goals.

The Red Brigades was a Marxist-Leninist left wing terrorist group active in Italy in the 1970s and early 1980s. Known as ‘Brigate Rosse’ in Italian and sometimes shortened to BR, their main aim was to force Italy to leave the NATO alliance. They are most famous for the kidnap and murder of former Italian Prime Minister Aldo Moro in 1978. During their long history of political and at times somewhat random violence they carried out approximately 14,000 acts of violence.

Red Army Faction (RAF), also called Red Army Fraction, byname Baader-Meinhof Gang, German Rote Armee Fraktion and Baader-Meinhof Gruppe, radical leftist group formed in 1968 and popularly named after two of its early leaders, Andreas Baader (1943–77) and Ulrike Meinhof (1934–76).

The group had its origins among the radical elements of the German university protest movement of the 1960s, which decried the United States as an imperialist power and characterized the West German government as a fascist holdover of the Nazi era. From its early years, members supported themselves through bank robberies and engaged in terrorist bombings and arson, especially of West German corporations and businesses and of West German and U.S. military installations in West Germany. They also kidnapped and assassinated prominent political and business figures.

The goal of their terrorist campaign was to trigger an aggressive response from the government, which group members believed would spark a broader revolutionary movement. As its tactics became more violent, however, it lost much of the support it had enjoyed among the West German political left. By the mid-1970s the group had expanded its scope outside West Germany and occasionally allied itself with militant Palestinian groups. For example, in 1976 two Baader-Meinhof guerrillas took part in a Palestinian hijacking of an Air France jetliner, which eventually ended after the successful Entebbe raid in Uganda by Israeli commandos.

The Japanese Red Army (日本赤軍, Nihon Sekigun[SUP]?[/SUP], JRA) was a communist militant group founded by Fusako Shigenobu early in 1971 in Lebanon. After the Lod airport massacre, it sometimes called itself Arab-JRA. The JRA's stated goals were to overthrow the Japanese government and the monarchy, as well as to start a world revolution.

The Communist Party of Peru (Spanish: Partido Comunista del Perú), more commonly known as the Shining Path (Sendero Luminoso), is a Maoist guerrilla insurgent organization in Peru. When it first launched the internal conflict in Peru in 1980, its stated goal was to replace what it saw as bourgeois democracy with "New Democracy". The Shining Path believed that by establishing a dictatorship of the proletariat, inducing cultural revolution, and eventually sparking world revolution, they could arrive at pure communism. Their representatives said that existing socialist countries were revisionist, and they claimed to be the vanguard of the world communist movement. The Shining Path's ideology and tactics have been influential among other Maoist insurgent groups, notably the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and other Revolutionary Internationalist Movement-affiliated organizations.[SUP][2][/SUP]
Widely condemned for its brutality,[SUP][3][/SUP][SUP][4][/SUP] including violence deployed against peasants, trade union organizers, popularly elected officials and the general civilian population,[SUP][5][/SUP] the Shining Path is classified by the Peruvian government, the U.S., the European Union, and Canada as a terrorist organization.

The Irish Republican Army (IRA) is any of several armed movements in Ireland in the 20th and 21st centuries dedicated to Irish republicanism, the belief that all of Ireland should be an independent republic.

I think a big difference with some of the Islamic terrorist today is that they are first and one timers almost like they are trying out for the team so to speak. A lot of the above groups seem to have used the same core group of people more often. It's all the newbies the Muslims attract that seem to be the difference which allows for a much broader reach. The earlier terrorists might have hit western targets but not as much in the west as they are now.

Was it one of those groups that kidnapped a Jewish cruise ship passenger and tossed him overboard? I forget off the top of my head.

It was the PLF, Palestine Liberation Front that attacked the Achille Lauro, an Italian ship.

On October 7, 1985, four men representing the Palestine Liberation Front (PLF) hijacked the Italian MS Achille Lauro liner off the coast of Egypt, as she was sailing from Alexandria to Ashdod, Israel.

The hijacking was masterminded by Muhammad Zaidan, leader of the PLF. One 69-year-old Jewish American man in a wheelchair, Leon Klinghoffer, was murdered by the hijackers and thrown overboard.
