What pearls of wisdom have you passed on to the younger generation?

I think we all benefit from the learning of others and I've tried to give my son the benefit of my experiences. Now that I have grandchildren, I hope I'll live long enough to do the same with them. Whether or not my experiences will be meaningful to them is another thing, but I got to thinking about what I'd like to pass on to them some day and wondered if others have done the same with younger members of their family.

I think one of the most important things I'd like to pass on is to treat others with kindness and respect whenever possible. The "golden rule" so to speak. Be willing to listen to the other side before making judgments. Be considerate of those less fortunate than you. Be grateful for the blessings of family and friends and never underestimate the value in forging a few strong friendships.

I'm sure there are many other things I want to impart before I leave this planet. Anyone care to share?

The Golden Rule is the biggie for sure, so far as I'm concerned.

One thing that I have found myself trying to impart to the teens and twenties time and time again is "you can't make anyone love you." I suspect that might be one of those pearls of wisdom that we each need to conclude for ourselves, though.

No matter how educated, no matter how old, learn something new each day or that day is wasted.

Words of anger are difficult to take back.

The only thing people will remember after you are gone is if you are extremely evil... or of good character.

These messages to teens are all so very true. But thinking back to my teenage years, I believe these excellent lessons in life may fall on deaf ears. The first kids born in this century are 15. Soon people born with a 19 in their birth years are going to sound so out of date. And of course, we old people have no idea of the world facing 21st century teens. When I became a teen, my grandparents had an 18 in their birth year. How could they know anything about life. My god, those old people didn't even have cars, never mind cars with fins, nor black & white TV when they were born. What did they know about life in 1960?
Kind of makes you want to grab a few teens by the throat and beat it into them. But that wouldn't work, they can run faster than us. We may not be able to impart our learned wisdom to those deaf teenagers, but we'll get revenge when those deaf ....... have deaf teenagers.

Don't sweat the small stuff and look at the big picture if you feel down on your luck and overwhelmed with life, there are many others far worse off than you. Be kind to other people and animals, you'll reap the rewards with inner peace and happiness.
