What should happen to people who intentionally leak secret government documents?

I think they should probably go to jail for a very long time, maybe life. Politically motivated or not they often don't understand the damage they do, in some cases putting lives at risk.

I'm talking about people who intentionally release these, not sloppy folks who have a few in their garage but shouldn't.

I think we probably keep too many things secret but that is a different issue. If we allow individuals to make decisions like this with impunity we will have problems, already have...

Would you say that about Daniel Ellsberg leaking the Pentagon Papers?
Yep, I know it may have been a good thing that they got out, but we just can't leave decisions like that in the hands of individuals. We need to change the system in some ways, but that's not the way.
Or Mark Felt, aka deep throat, leaking info to Woodward and Bernstein?
I think that is different, those were not state secrets. Or I don't think they were.

What secrets have been leaked thus far? We now know that Ukraine is actually losing the war to Russia. We have learned that for every Russian killed three Ukraine’s have been killed. We learned that ammunition is being sneaked into Ukraine from South Korea and we also learned that we now have a small entourage of U.S. Army consultants working alongside Ukraine strategists running the war for Ukraine.

Personally, it sounds to me like we have been lied to by being told Ukraine was winning the war. If we send American troops into Ukraine, we need to know, but will we? I had no idea that we had consultants in Ukraine. I think we did the same thing in Vietnam before we sent troops in. This war is intended to last a long time. A lot of people are making a lot off of this war.

Under the Obama Administration, they were supposedly going to close the holes where no one could no longer slip through and steal secret documents. I guess not.

I can't say. I believe there should be transparency when the populous has been told untruths or deceived.
Reasoning has it's limitations and human intellect doesn't seem to be an adequate judge of right and wrong.
You say this puts lives in jeopardy. This is true. So does giving misinformation to the people.

My scope of vision is restricted as to understanding how this is to be handled. More informed people
than myself will hopefully reason the significance of this action.
As an ordinary citizen, I'd rather be told the truth of things, even if not well received.

Ellsberg and Felt were whistleblowers, as was Edward Snowden. They exposed wrongdoings... illegal wrong doings.

This kid with access to top secret documents just wanted to be seen as a big shot with his Nazi clan on social media. He was also a supporter of Russia and might have thought that leaking that information would help Putin, but mainly he was a loser who thought he'd get some respect because he had access to top secret information.

What it comes down to is, he should have never had access to that kind of information. There's supposed to be a "need to know" rule with regards to accessing top secret information. It's supposed to be compartmentalized. If you don't need to know something to do your job, you don't have access to it. That rule seems to have gone by the wayside. Now it's, if we can make a buck from it, you can access it.

I'm not against punishing people for leaking documents. Depending on what level of secrecy they deserve. I know absolutely that Iraq launched a scud middle at the USA, but as it wasn't an ICBM. It fell into the ocean.

This from a navy seaman who signed a oath of silence of 75 years.

Regarding Snowdens action, it was a major embarrassment, but also showed some sneaky Pete stuff was done via NSA. And like the CIA cannot be fully trusted.

On the good side, since Snowdens actions, 100K
fewer people have access. And Chelsea got a pardon.

I saw on the news that the perpetrator in the Pentagon leak, who was the head of this online chat group, originally did it for a select group of people in the online group he was in and that the information wasn't intended to go any further. The news commentator said it seems to have been a move to impress the group members but it obviously got out of hand. I'm sure he'll get what he deserves.

Make an example of this traitor with a firing squad but it goes beyond him, way beyond. The Intelligence agencies need to be revamped from the lowest of the low to the very top. Throw them all out and start over.

Yes, we've been lied to about Ukraine while billions upon billions of taxpayer dollars are being spent there. We've been told that no American troops were in Ukraine while there were reports coming out on the sly that yes indeed, American troops have been there for a good while.

And to top it all off a war to defend Taiwan is being planned as China threatens.

I'm greatly ignorant on these kinds of things. I wonder what the motivation was. He's very young. How stupid can one be. His life is over if convicted.
I don't know that it's proven yet but one of the people in his gaming club said in an interview that he was doing it to appear important, that it was ego. Time will tell if that is the truth.

How someone can call the kid a Nazi, shows how mindless people have become.

Nazi here, Nazi there, Nazis everywhere!!

He described the leaker as a young, charismatic gun enthusiast in his early to mid-20s who worked at an unnamed military base.

The Post reported that the man was the leader of a Discord chat room, including roughly two dozen members who swapped "memes, offensive jokes and idle chitchat" and prayed and watched movies together.

The members included people from Russia and Ukraine and a number of other countries in Europe, Asia and South America, the paper reported.

We have no idea whether or not he was a Nazi, but Discord isn't exactly well regarded. And he was a member of a group called Thug Shaker Central. Here is an article on Discord.

Discord, a prime ground for online 'rebels'... and leaks?

Forums at gamer-centric Discord social network appear to have the appeal of authenticity that appears to have been lost by social media firms like Twitter.
It is perhaps no accident that a trove of sensitive US documents reportedly ended up in a chat room on Discord, one of a small group of platforms that are widely seen by experts as natural haunts for online renegades.

While the authenticity of the material has yet to be confirmed by officials, The Washington Post reported the embarrassing leak of secrets about the war in Ukraine came from a Discord user nicknamed "OG", a gun enthusiast who works on a US military base.

The New York Times said a "trail of digital evidence" led to a 21-year-old national guardsman named Jack Teixeira as the leader of the private chat group, called Thug Shaker Central. He has not been officially identified as a suspect.
San Francisco-based Discord was created in 2015 primarily as a platform for gamers to chat, but it has also become an alternative for users disenchanted with major players Facebook, Instagram or Twitter.
Discord allows communities to set up something called servers, which are virtual spaces where users can chat, share media, and connect with other users who share similar interests.
Citing fellow members of the group, the Post reported that the chat room allegedly behind the leak was a destination for two dozen men and boys who shared a "mutual love of guns, military gear and God."
"There are a million microcosms out there in social media land that are like that," said Syracuse University research professor Jason Davis.
"Echo chambers, I call them, and Discord is pretty famous for them."

'Dark pockets'

Similar loosely run forums exist at Reddit and Mastodon, most of which involve benign topics like hobbies or games, but always with a tinge of freedom from censors that some believe hold too much sway over Facebook, Instagram or Snapchat.
"Dark pockets exist," Davis said. "Discord, the name tells you what you need to know."
"It's a place for rebels and nerds (who) embrace that kind of anti-mainstream sentiment."
Discord has already landed in hot water for playing a role in a 2017 right-wing rally in Charlottesville, Virginia which erupted in violence and left one person dead.
The FBI found Discord chats where a white supremacist leader seemed to encourage violence at the event, and Discord said afterward that it banned servers promoting neo-Nazi ideology.
Discord has also been accused of being used to share child pornography and by predators to communicate with minors.

The attraction of Discord or Mastodon are that they are "distributed," meaning no central entity has complete control over them, said Cyber Threat Alliance chief executive Michael Daniel.
There is no one in charge of checking user identity, making the forums ideal for those want to release information onto the internet anonymously, according to Daniel.
A Discord spokesperson told AFP that user safety is a priority, and that content violating its policies can result in people being banned, servers being shut down, and police alerted.
"In regards to the apparent breach of classified material, we are cooperating with law enforcement," a Discord spokesperson said.
"As this remains an active investigation, we cannot provide further comment at this time."

I agree completely our government keeps too many things secret. However, for a government to operate there are things that need to be kept secret, and its dangerous to allow individuals to decide what should and shouldn't be released. I think our system of deciding what should and shouldn't be secret needs overhaul with as you say the goal of a lot more transparency. But condoning these leaks is akin to allowing vigilante justice, incompatible with a functioning government and legal system.
Mark Felt, aka deep throat, leaking info to Woodward and Bernstein?
I've given more thought to Felt and am still not sure if what he did was illegal, it does seem different from what Ellsberg, Snowden, Teixeira and company did. I did find that some do not believe his motives were pure.

The Myth of Deep Throat
Mark Felt wasn’t out to protect American democracy and the rule of law; he was out to get a promotion.

I think we can adjust penalties depending on actual harm done, but probably not for Teixeira, even as young as he was. He was trained in military intelligence. He was obviously told this was a crime and smart enough to understand. He doesn't deserve the same kind of pass we give to juveniles. I think Biden may have spoken up much too soon. We don't know yet that no harm was done. Although, his words may have dampened the enthusiasm of of alarmists. Teixeira should serve jail time, probably serious jail time, at least more than 10 years, but probably less than 90.

There is no reason for the public or another nation to expect transparency when it comes to military secrets. There is a very valid reason for having secret items in order to protect this nation.

Traitors who leak these get the firing squad. End of discussion.

In today's permissive society, it won't happen of course as too many bleeding heart liberals think they have the right to know what the military is doing at all times. Wrong, but that's the way it is.
