What song brings you to tears still when you hear it?

Not actual tears. But a few things make me sad.

Louis Armstrong singing "Wonderful World" is pretty harrowing for me. I've no idea why, but it makes my heart heavy.

Then there's Auld Lang Syne. Again, no real idea why, but it makes me sad and depressed.

On another note, I have spent a couple days listening to the discography of Tom Verlaine (and Television). I love his music, and he was among my favorite guitarists. Apparently he was difficult to work with, and therefore didn't record often in the last decades of his life. He's gone now, and I hate the feeling that I'll never get to hear new music from Verlaine.

Which leads to David Bowie. I've always been a big fan, and yes I did shed a tear when I heard of his passing. He had a new album out at the time called "Blackstar". I'd heard a couple tracks from it since they were singles, and I bought the album on release. However, those were the final Bowie recordings, and to this day I can't bring myself to play the album. I don't want to end the record with the knowledge I'd used up all the new Bowie there would ever be.

If you know the story of Eva Cassidy this should bring a tear. Eva never thought she was very talented, she had to be encouraged to get onto stage. She performed largely in and around Washington D.C. Iceland was the only place she ever played in Europe, yet her exceptional voice, after her death at 33, make her a star worldwide. Since her passing she has sold more than ten million records. Supposedly when Sting heard this cover he teared up and said it was her song now.

Any classical music lovers here? I always sort of choke up in Act I of La Boheme, where Rudolfo and Mimi meet for the first time and sing that beautiful, charming duet, introducing themselves to each other. They start out as neighbors meeting for the first time, and by the end of the song they are already in love.

Gorecki's Symphony Number 3 is a really powerful piece of music:

Why do we cry when we hear certain music? Your personality can be linked to the reason you cry according to a study.
There is a test called the Big 5 which rates you according to 5 personality attributes.

"The participants in the study had been given a psychological test to classify them according to five personality attributes — neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. When the researchers sorted the data, they found that people who ranked high on the neuroticism scale experienced sadness when they had been moved to tears by music, and people who scored high in the openness to experience scale felt like crying because the music provoked a profound sense of awe."

So I'm more apt to cry out of awe.

so from a small study like that [versus world popn] they can extrapolate those findings and try to convince us it applies to everyone ?? B.S.

Patches

Song by

Dickey Lee
Down by the river that flows by the coal yards.
Stands wooden houses with shutters torn down
There lives a girl everybody calls Patches
Patches my darling of Old Shanty town
We plan to marry when June brought the summer
I couldn't wait to make Patches my bride
Now I don't see how that ever can happen
My folks say No, and my heart breaks inside
Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
But a girl from that place would just bring me disgrace
So my folks won't let me love you
Each night I cry as I think of that shanty
And pretty Patches there watching the door
She dosn't know that I can't come to see her
Patches must think that I love her no more
I hear a neighbor tellin my father
He said a girl name of Patches was found
Floating face down in that dirty old river
That flows by the coal yards in Old Shanty Town
Patches oh what can I do
I swear I'll always love you
It may not be right But I'll join you tonight
Patches I'm coming to you.
