What? That can't be the right price!

In April of this year I was paying $7.99 for a 7/16 x4x8 sheet of OSB. OSB is a material used for flooring subfloor, roof decks, wall stability, etc.
Today the price for the same material, at the same store was $22.95 per sheet! How can that be, I asked. I was told that there is such a shortage that business and property owners, are stock piling the material for protection from storms, rioting and physical damage, that the material is very hard to obtain. Hence the supply and demand excuse kicks in. Are you experiencing high material costs, product shortages, including food and supplies in your area?

Oh, I KNOW! i bought some 2 x 10's FIR (white wood) and it was higher than if I had bought CEDAR , a few years ago.
BTW: Doesn't China own most of the lumber mills in America now, or am I wrong? Anybody know?

I also looked at std 2x4x8, price @ $4.79 each. In April, $1.89 each same exact item. I was just talking to a friend of mine whose is an architect and still working and designing homes about the sudden increase in wood prices and he said that they have redesigned many of the executive homes to incorporate steel studs in place of the standard wood studs. I just looked their price up at the local big box store, $2.79.

I don't know about who owns the wood mills in the states maybe somebody else can answer that. But, I do know who own the steel mills!

Lumber prices have gone off the charts here in Missouri. Lowe's, Menards, Home Depot, and even the local hardware/lumber store are all asking well over $6 for a simple 2x4x8. I was going to put up some more shelving in the basement this Winter, but after looking at lumber prices, I have put that project on hold. The last time I bought a 2x4 was probably 5 or 6 years ago, and the price back then was about $1.
