What The Heck Goes On During Mental Health Treatment-mass murders & failed treatment

I'm looking at this tragic mass killing by this spoiled brat narcissist Elliot Rodger-yes I am going to use his name because I want these mass killers to associated with the proper description of their character and actions. Elliot Rodger is a piece of crap coward, loser, narcissist etc. But anyway this guy already had multiple therapists. What the heck did they talk about or try to accomplish during therapy? And I've been hearing for years that many of these mass shooters, especially the young male killers were already in mental health treatment and medicated-I think over half were on a class of drugs called SSRIs?

WHAT THE HECK GOES ON DURING MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT? Set aside gun laws or lack there of. Forget about mandatory forced incarceration for mental health treatment. Forget about mental health & background checks for a minute. Why is the mental health profession failing these patients. I understand it might take years to get someone where you want them. But shouldn't eliminating THE danger factor take priority. I don't care if this kid couldn't get a date for another 10 years I just want the danger factor/risk lowered or eliminated. And by the way I don't think this was about sex as much as this piece of crap walking around with a "blonde" trophy girlfriend-he wanted peer status.

Are mental health patients over or under medicated? Are they mis-medicated? Do they lack enough actual talk therapy? Are they deceiving their doctors? Personally I think over medication could be a problem because too much makes them a junky and more important when they don't have enough medication now they have to deal with what ever sober, now they're miserable, now all those evil thoughts start running around their head, fast because now the adrenal glands tripped by anger are working. Now they have no outlet for their emotions-I digress.

Could it be as simple as age old platitudes or actual work on your part on the areas you want to improve on and succeed.

What exactly is the mental health profession doing for actual treatment-saying this person needs to be committed for long term treatment doesn't count. What are the nuts and bolts of mental health treatment.

Add to that the fact that just because the meds are prescribed doesn't mean the person is taking them. Sometimes it takes months or years to even find something that works. The patient doesn't always tell the therapist the truth, either. The whole mental health system is a very iffy thing at best. It is a mess, a very frightening mess.

These types of senseless killings by formerly "normal" people did not start really happening until the SSRI drugs starting being used for treating people. And the drugs like Ritalin that they give for ADHD are often administered to very young children, and they just progress to stronger drugs as they get older, and the problems with behavior are more complicated.
From what I have read, pretty much all of the kids that have lost it and killed other kids, were on some of these kinds of drugs.
On the face of it, this young man lived a life of luxury, driving the most expensive cars, and getting about anything he wanted; none of which he appreciated.
From some of the things they show he said, I think he felt unloved by everyone. When I worked at the academy for correcting children like this boy; it seemed like this was pretty typical of most of them. They were given everything they could think of by their parents; yet they didn't feel the love a child needs to feel from their parents.
They would come into the kitchen (where I worked)to ask "what's for dinner?", even though it was posted on the bulletin board outside. They even kind of like having to help with the dishes after meals; these kinds of things were as close as they had ever really come to being a regular kid.
Not all the other people who have done these senseless killings have been from rich families like this one was; but I think this played into what happened, as well.

Still, I wonder why the first reports showed eyewitnesses saying that there were TWO people in the car ?? This is another thing that seems to happen over and over. Two (or more)shooters are reported in the first news reports, and then they change it to the old refrain of "one shooter, dead from a shot in the head."

My daughter suffered with mental health problems for 25 years. She was CONSTANTLY let down by the mental health services in the UK. She was failed again and again. Our lives were also ruined by the system. I could write essays about the failures of Mental Health services in this country. The old asylums were not good, but there should be a sort of halfway house where certain sufferers are cared for as they are really unable to live in the community. Sad but very true.

Can't agree with you more. This kid was "treated" since 8. Why was he given a therapist at 8 years old. Home come not a psychiatrist? What was the event or behavior that the parents or dad felt he needed a therapist? Did the mom or dad use a therapist thinking it would help a child? What was the goal of this therapy? Busy career minded parents using the therapist as a parent, friend or priest?

I forget how many shots fired but I thought I saw he had 10 magazines. So he drove(hands occupied) to multiple crime scenes with time to reload?

Psychological treatment at levels such as this are pretty much useless - it becomes a battle between the therapist and the drugs that have been prescribed.

And the drugs usually win.

The whole field of pshrink counseling is a questionable one, and this opinion from someone who spent 4 years getting a B.S. in Psych. They aren't as clever as they think - having an honest conversation for half an hour with a trusted friend can do as much - or more - than months on the couch. That's why the docs revert to the pills - because if they were to admit that their therapies were ineffective it would bring into question everything else in the field.

Sometimes, a cigar is just a cigar.

He had a form of autism...maybe it was the parents thinking that a therapist would help. After his mother saw his writings, he started going to 2 therapists a day. You would think if he was at the point of needing 2 therapists a day, he would have been placed into a mental hospital.

The media gives constant coverage to these killers, which glamorizes them. He has a fan club on facebook, and these kids call him their hero.
