Now at 2:15 in the morning, it's neither sunrise nor sunset ... just me, suspicious shadows in the hallway, weird noises from the frig and a spoonful of peanut butter while contemplating the meaning of life, as questionable decisions and existential oopsies argue over who gets to keep me awake longer.

my sister lives in Vancouver but never talks about the weather unless its snowing?

If that is Vancouver BC,Canada, it rarely snows in Vancouver.

How light or dark it gets at what time is merely a function of how far north; or south you are from the Equator. Close to the Equator sunrise/sunset times don't change as much as other places that are further north or south. In the Northern Arctic regions the sun never sets from late May to late July and before those dates, it's merely dusk for a short period of time. The opposite is true in winter months when there's no sunlight for a couple of months and little daylighrt for even longer. The opposite is true in the Southern Hemisphere.

Therefore, S.A.D. is much more prominent in the far north & south than it is closer to the equator. As a general rule the mental well being of some percentage of the population is more stable if they're closer to the Equator.
