(1958) 6.8/10 IMDB Rating
Ingrid Bergman
Cary Grant

Formula Doris Day type of movie.

It's said that Cary Grant refused to do the picture with anyone but Ingrid Bergman.

I had never seen it before so it was fun.
You're on a roll, Old Feller! I watched this last night (YouTube) and thoroughly enjoyed it. Like you, I hadn't previously seen it.
Thanks!

Suspense (1946)

This is an unusual pot boiler of a noir for several reasons. The female lead, Belita --in real life a former Olympian ice skater-- stars in her first of two noir films featuring her stylish skating routines. The other was The Hunted (1948). Belita was riding the popularity of Sonja Henie from her box office hits in the 1930s.

The film was distributed by Monogram Pictures, a “poverty row” studio that eventually folded into Allied Artists Picture Corporation. Monogram’s vast majority of movies were “B” films, intended mostly for second billing on double feature presentations (common until the 1960s). But in this case the studio dipped its toe into “A” territory, with much larger financing, famous stars, and a better screenplay.

Director Frank Tuttle (The Glass Key, This Gun for Hire) made only one more picture before skedaddling over to Europe, having been outed by HUAC as a communist. He returned to Hollywood to resume his career in 1951. Likewise, supporting actress Bonita Granville made only a few more pictures before marrying wealthy oilman Jack Wrather. Granville and Wrather became big name entertainment producers.

Barry Sullivan stars as a grifter who lucks into work for, and eventually control over, a popular ice show theater. Despite the ice star’s marriage to the show’s producer (Albert Dekker), Sullivan soon becomes attracted to her, and she eventually falls for him as well. A theater associate, played by the great Eugene Pallette in his final film role, gets wise to their attraction, and tries to warn off Sullivan. Along the way, Sullivan’s former girlfriend from New York --alluringly played by Granville-- shows up, wanting to rekindle her and Sullivan’s romance, but Sullivan continually rudely rebuffs her.

Soon Dekker discovers the romance going on behind his back. He takes matters into his own hands, and with parallel complicity by Granville, the tawdry tale twists into a typical noir maze, culminating in some inevitable deaths.

The picture’s theme is a familiar one, reminiscent of popular noirs such as Double Indemnity and The Postman Always Rings Twice. It’s not quite to their levels, but is certainly worth watching for Belita’s attractive skating routines, some rare footage of the popular Cuban singer Miguelito Valdes, and a good example of a poverty row studio rearing its head to the million dollar class.

That was a terrific movie'Whiplash' saw that when it came out in movie theatre
JK Simmons was terrific as the demanding teacher, was happy he won Best Supporting Actor Oscar Sue
I'll look for it. Agree Simmons is a terrific actor and he has blessed us with a large, varied body of work.
Speaking of great actors with a long list of credits, last night I watched the always wonderful Morgan Freeman in the heartwarming movie, The Magic of Belle Isle. (Netflix)

He was particularly wonderful in this movie, @StarSong, really amazing (and upsetting). His acting in this inspired me to look for more of his work.

Whenever I have a visceral reaction to an actor in a role like his in Whiplash, I always pause to think what an excellent actor that person is.

Edited to add: I thought Miles Teller was great in Whiplash, too.

I just watched "Project Hail Mary"

🎥
Project Hail Mary is a 2026 science fiction film produced and directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and written by Drew Goddard, based on the 2021 novel by Andy Weir. It stars Ryan Gosling, who also produced the film; Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce appear in supporting roles. The film follows Ryland Grace (Gosling), a school teacher who awakens aboard an interstellar spacecraft with no memory of how he got there.

The movie was not what I had expected it to be.
I liked it.

I too enjoyed it, and for me also it was not what I expected. I had anticipated more of a "hard" SciFi story, but it was sort of a comedy/thriller-- the kind of films that Steven Spielberg was/is so adept at.

Gosling puts me in mind almost of a Donald O'Connor type actor: affable, but good at comedy. He's certainly more believable in lighter roles.

I think it was a well done production-- pretty much a family film that you could take the kids to, but strong enough that adults can enjoy. It carried a PG-13 rating, but that was probably for elements that young children would not understand. Was there language? I can't remember.

Strong cinematography and set design. I was impressed by the "alien" character, which I found out by researching that it was done with puppet techniques-- not CGI. The voice was of the puppeteer.

No, I do not recall any bad language. I dislike when every sentence has curse words in it.
It is uncalled for. My Son says everyone talks that way now. I hope not.
I guess I will just need to watch it again to see...😉

I don't have an urge to see this but my son felt it was the best new movie of the year and your comments are interesting. One day I'll watch it.

The Godfather. We were sitting there looking at the list of movies when it came up under leaving in May category. I turned to Heloise and told her I'd never seen it, and to my surprise she hadn't either.

Since it's been around so long some of the more memorable scenes weren't surprises, but still a well made movie.
