What was the very first Major News Story You can remember

The first news that made an impression on me was when I was a small child getting ready to go to school.
In February, 1952 the announcement came over the radio that King George VI had died.
For some reason that is the first news story to stick in my mind.

The Lunar landing it was shown in school. When I went on a road trip when I was 16 with a friend to California and was in a mexican restaurant when the waitress came from the back crying...that Elvis had died.

At least twice before, Bobby Joe Burns, 28, had been committed to a mental institution for paranoid schizophrenia and was given to abusing narcotics, according to Southwest American news stories from the time. [/FONT] [FONT=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]After his capture in the area west of Moffett on Tuesday, he would claim to police that his mother had consented and that he was enacting an Aztec sacrifice ritual. The ritual included removal of an eye, part of the nose and part of the tongue. Bobby Joe Burns also referred police to verses in Revelations 20: 9-11. He carried his mother's head to the church wrapped in a sheet, then walked over the Garrison Avenue bridge into eastern Oklahoma, sleeping in a cold farm field that Monday night. During the questioning, his brother delivered two packages of cigarettes to him and left after saying, "Joe, we don't blame you for what happened?" [/FONT] [FONT=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Edna Burns had secured the release of her son from a state mental institution about a year prior to the murder. Other members of the family had tried to persuade Edna Burns to return Bobby Joe to the hospital. [/FONT] [FONT=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Following his capture, Circuit Court Judge Paul Wolfe immediately committed Bobby Joe Burns to the state hospital for 30 days of observation. [/FONT] [FONT=Arial,Helvetica,Geneva,Swiss,SunSans-Regular]Despite later asking that he be charged with murder and executed, he would later rescind that request and ask to be released. Burns would remain in the mental hospital for the rest of his life. Although solid confirmation of his death there many decades later hasn't been obtained, it is believed he died in the state hospital sometime in the 1980s. This was a local story that was all over the news when I was in high school.[/FONT]

When JFK was assassinated,I was in the 4th grade. I didn't understand why our teachers were letting us out early from school. When I got home,I remember seeing my parents sitting in front of our black&white TV set watching Walter Cronkite.My mom was crying. Sue

Although I was only four years old, it was when the japs invaded Pearl Harbor. We had one of those big old tube radios and I didn’t quite understand what was going on. Everyone was glued to the radio.

The death of King George VI. Up until then I was oblivious to news. We had no TV just the radio which was a large cabinet in the lounge room that contained valves, not transistors.

The news was announced at school at an assembly on the playground. We all recited "The King is dead. Long live the Queen", sang God Save the Queen and the Recessional and it was explained to us that purple and black were the colours of mourning for royalty. These colours appeared in every shop window and public building for at least the next month. Flags flew at half mast for the mourning period, including at school.
