What was your mothers' first name ...or your fathers' if you prefer

Hi Sunny...I had an Aunt Sadie....She had a Gown Shop....I was a lucky girl to get my Prom dress and my wedding gown from my Aunt Sadie...She was a generous lady...

My Mother was Rose (Sadie was her sister) My Dad was Tony (Birth name Anthony) My Dad was born in his house....He contracted measles when he was an infant...He was blind in one eye...
My old brother was named after my dad....Anthony, but called Tony....

Margaret and Santino. Mom went by Margaret, Dad by Joseph (his middle name). They were born in the early 1920s and both disliked their given names - my mother thought hers was too common and my father thought his was too ethnic and unusual. They had to compromise when naming their kids.

Yes I suppose they were, so yes he'd want to change his name to something more American I suppose , lots of italians both here and the USA are called Joe, and usually it's their actual middle name.

My best male friend when I was younger was an Italian from Palermo and was called Joe but his first name was actually Dino... . Of course he was of a generation that didn't need to change their name to get work, but it may have been passed down from his father or grandfather..

There were so many people of my mother's generation who used shortened names. And some weren't even shortened, my Uncle Jack was really John for instance. I can remember a Nellie/Eleanor, a Flo/Florance. Still happens I suppose, my name is Leonie but a lot of people shorten it to Leigh.

And then there are the nicknames, we love them in Australia. All redheads used to be called Bluey when I was a kid. I've lost count of the people who are better known by a nickname than their own names.

My mother was named Hildegarde, which she hated. Her mother came over from Germany, and my grandfather was English, but adopted by a German family, so he was basically German, too.
Her middle name was Winona (don’t ask me why they chose a Native American name for her), so once she grew up and got married, she went by Winnie, and very few people ever knew that was not her given name.
When she had to sign something official, she signed it ā€œH. Winnieā€; so even then she didn’t use her first name.

Mom was Elizabeth, always called Betty,my daughter has her name as a middle name,Jamie Elizabeth. Her mom was Bridget always called Bee.
Dad was Daniel John Jr.His mom was Mary, deceased before I was born.

It's funny now when I think about it. My Mom's name was Elizabeth .and they called her Lizzie. My Dad's name was Francis and they called him Frank. My Mother in laws name was Elizabeth and they called her Betty. My sister's MIL's name was also Elizabeth and they called her Beth, her husbands name was also Francis and they called him Francis. Boy was it confusing at times.
