We're approaching the end of this eventful year — just ten more days! What do you think were the best and worst events that transpired in 2021? You can include things that happened in your life or on the national or world stage.

  • A major event for the U.S. was our withdrawal from Afghanistan. After 20 years, we're finally out, which is good for the U.S. but maybe not so good for the Afghani people. Time will tell, I guess. The thing about wars these days is, it doesn't affect most of us. We don't have to pay any more in taxes to fund the wars; they just get added to the debt. We aren't affected at all unless we know someone who volunteers to go fight them. There's no sacrifice by the general public. Some 7,000 U.S. military personnel died in combat or peacekeeping operations in Afghanistan and 30,000 died of suicide.

So our withdrawal from Afghanistan is one of the best events of 2021 (IMO).
  • One of the worst was the January 6 insurrection. That was insane. It was also political, so I won't say any more about it.
  • One of the best events was the approval and rollout of the covid-19 vaccine, which was developed in less than a year. That was quite a feat.
  • By far the greatest event of 2021 was the release of the Beatles documentary Get Back. That was incredible. (y)

The best event of 2021 was on a personal level. I went to my eldest nephew,Jay's wedding in Hudson,NY over Labor Day weekend, was the 1st time in 2 years I saw my brother,John&family in person, along with family friends I had seen in yrs. The only down side was our sister,Mary couldn't be there since she had surgery in July, she lives outside of London, haven't seen her since 2012.
The worst event of 2021:
Jan 6th invasion of U.S. Capitol
the millions of lives we continue to lose to this deadly pandempic

The trial and conviction of Derek Chauvin was a huge story. It's good that he was convicted of murdering George Floyd because that's what he did. It showed that our justice system works when it has to. It also showed that there are some really bad cops out there, but many cops spoke out against Chauvin, which is good. So it's good and bad.

Irwin, I agree with all of your points. I would add that one of the worst events was the destruction of Mayfield, Kentucky by an unprecedented tornado.

I am so hard pressed to think of any positive events beyond what you mentioned, although I am sure there were more. Perhaps the development of a pill just approved by the FDA to fight the effects of Covid, but technically it won't be available until 2022.

Other momentous and calamitous events...

Fires on the west coast that brought smoke and soot to Colorado pretty much all summer. It was so bad, I don't think we opened the windows all summer.

There were two high profile legal cases involving police and one involving a vigilante:
  • The Derik Chauvin murder trial
  • The Kim Potter murder Trial
  • and the Kyle Rittenhouse murder trial
There was no major rioting stemming from the verdicts of any of them, though.

What were the best and worst events of 2021?

Too many to name. I think one of the worst is seeing that buffoon enter the White House. I'm still trying to think of the best. I'll get back to you as soon as I think of one.
