What wild animals visits your yard-which is your favorite, which is not

The orange feral cat uses our fence as a highway. He jumps onto the chain link fence in the back, then hops up on the wood fence on the side yard. He walks down the entire length of this fence, then hops down onto the shorter wood fence in the front, walks the entire length, and jumps down to the sidewalk.

He then runs the half-block over to the neighbors house. Between those two houses a lot of mice dwell. The neighbors can't find the nest. It could be behind their houses by the apartments. The orange cat is a super mouser.

He catches his fat grey mouse. Brings it back, retracing his steps. Odd. I look up feral cats. As I thought, as soon as they catch a mouse, they eat it. Unless they are feeding a mate or kittens. Sure enough, the mousing picks up. I warn the neighbors not to interfere, he is catching mice and on a mission.

We live on a cul-de-sac. Everyone appreciates the cat. About four months later, I see him. He brings his mate, and two orange and white kittens. He takes them to the neighbors house. This winter I only see the orange cat. He eats his mouse at the neighbors and comes back through my yard.

The worst wild thing in my yard are snakes. Ugh. My next door neighbor tells me there are snakes under her porch. In the spring the babies spread throughout the neighborhood. They look like garden snakes. If they bite my dog, he could get sick. If my dog eats them, they could get sick. I dislike snakes. We try and catch the ones who come our way. We've only caught and disposed of one. They are quick.

Our neighbors. with the mouse problem, catch three snakes. One is huge-feasting on mice probably. I don't know where are these endless mice come from but I read that one female mouse can have 100 babies in a year. I presume they are from the apartments trash bins.

We also get deer down from the mountains, quail, raccoons, coyotes, and other assorted wild life. I like the orange cat.

Squirrels, chipmunks, nuthatches, chickadees, bluejays , cardinals, Baltimore oriels, humming birds, downy woodpeckers, hairy woodpeckers, doves, finches, robins, grosbeaks, swallows, titmice, buntings, martins, eagles, hawks, turkey crows, grackles, redwing blackbirds , vultures, coyotes, raccoons, possums, the odd bear or wolves, deer, wild turkeys, mice, gophers, rabbits, porcupines, beavers, owls, fly catchers, snakes, bats,

....too many to list.

Skunks and possums are my favorites. We have coyotes, foxes and white tail deer also. And of course squirrels by the ton. :love_heart:

Keesha,

But which is your favorite and which do you dislike the most. I dislike squirrels, they have become too tame. Glad we have none. As for the birds, we have a variety as well and I enjoy the Hawks the most. But love to listen to the song birds. Hummingbirds are fun to watch and will dive bomb you.

Dislike the pigeons-known as flying rats and we have a bunch of them. My neighbor has a woodpecker. I haven't seen it. But I have no trees.

Are all of these animals in your yard?

I wouldn't like a bear in my yard or in my town. You must live in the country. I live in a subdivision, but close to a mountain range. When food runs short the deer come down. The other animals live in a nearby undeveloped (is this a word, lol) very large field which is now for sale. Our area still has some rual space but not much. I have seen foxes around.

The deer, songbirds, coyotes and wild turkey I like best.
Skunks and possums I like the least.
:lofl: chic.

Yes I live in the country with quite a bit of forest land around us. These animals don’t all come up to the house but many do. 8F59220B-63E2-414C-A2BE-C503BDF47934.jpg

I’ll try and add some pictures. Squirrels can be a bit annoying but we have a cat who will kill them if she catches them.

I’ve got all kinds of pictures to post and I used to have no problems posting pictures but now every picture I go to add says it’s too big. I’ll try later.

Squirrels can be a bit annoying but I find them highly entertaining.

Squirrels which Pickles hates with a passion...if I see one in the yard when I’m letting him out...I give advance warning to the squirrel.

Same with Birds.

Fresno also has a lot of roof rats...UGH

I had them in my attic one summer, a nightmare. My pest control guy was setting traps and they weren’t falling for it.

Finally had to have someone go around and seal any small hole or opening that they could get in...had a few air vents in roof that had them.

Also have to make sure no trees touch your roof....

Cost $800 but finally got rid of them..this was a few years ago....but they’re still out there, I read on my neighborhood app people having issues.

Most dogs hate squirrels I think. I know mine does. I once had a spaniel that knew the word "squirrel" and would jump at the door to chase when she heard it. They were always attacking our bird feeders.

Squirrels are horrible critters for hoarding food from bird feeders which is why baffles were created and caged feeders
They used to drive me nuts cause I loved feeding the birds. At one time we thought we’d outsmart the squirrels and put them on the clothes line since it was so long .

Just when I thought we’d nipped this problem i glance out only to see one determined squirrel hanging on the clothesline moving hand over hand to get to the feeders. :lofl: Well I roared with laughter for so long I had tears coming down my face. It was so funny.

Our dogs know the ‘s’ word.:lofl:

Those squirrels will always somehow find a way!

Squirrels, opossum, garter snakes, blue jays, red-tailed hawks, doves, rabbits, sparrows, cedar waxwings, robins, wrens, blue-tailed skinks, fence lizards, anoles, more. I enjoy watching all of them.

Our neighborhood is big on skunks and opossums. Coyotes and bobcats in our woods out back. In our backyard canal, we have had gators and a pair of otters. Sand hill cranes and lots of different birds. And, rabbits....lots of rabbits. Haven’t seen a snake in years but big old roaches make an appearance once in awhile.

Closest I have in our neighborhood.
Used to have a woman jogging thru the neighborhood wearing the hide of some poor little spandex animal . As a creature spandex must be popular hide to use. The only thing I don't understand is how that hide has the ability to stretch so much. It can & does I guess that is why it's used so much.

You’ve got cute, adorable otters?
Ive got otter envy. You obviously live in a warmer area near water.
Swimming with otters is one of the funniest things I’ve ever done.
Years ago on an interior canoeing trip in Algonquin park there were so many little lakes that were connected by little rivers where there’d be otters playing in the current like it was a water slide. They aren’t shy either. You can swim right up to them.
I wish I could trade a wild turkey for an otter.

we have loads of squirrels and they get in the overhang of the mobile home---
rattle snakes --we also have foxes--the first time i saw a fox i thought it was a dog it was standing there barking

I have our neighborhood cat, she lives here & at about two or three other houses...:) Next door neighbor & I went together & had her spayed, & tuned up. Then there is the deer that will actually come up on the porch to eat the cat food ? and get a drink from the cat's water dish. Then the Possum . Then is't mostly just birds, the occasional snake.....I hate snakes !!

We live in the deep woods, so we get all sorts of critters. My favorites are the whitetail deers...we have several that visit the yard regularly to get a drink from the birdbath and nibble on the grass. Like most, we have squirrels by the dozens. We also have quite a few turkeys, and they are quite active in the Fall. We used to have several red foxes, but a lot of the neighbors raise a few chickens, and they've pretty well "eliminated" the foxes. Keeping the raccoons out of the garden is an ongoing thing, and I've just about given up on trying to grow corn, as a result.
On the downside, we are seeing increasing numbers of armadillos as the climate continues to warm, and they create a real mess if they decide to dig a burrow at the edge of the yard....plus they are known to carry Leprosy...so when I see any of them hanging around, they become "target practice".

In my yard we get snakes, rabbits, squirrels, voles, field mice, birds of many kinds including Red Tailed Hawks, and we haven't had a raccoon in the yard in many years now, but we had one come in and get into our garage years back, going after dry dog food. The ones I dislike most are the snakes, mice and voles because they dig holes and cause damage.

Behind our back fence we get many deer visitors which we love, back there are also coyotes, foxes, rabbits, prairie dogs, raccoons, skunks, pheasant, eagles, hawks, etc.

A couple of days ago after I came back from walking my dog in the park, I let him out in the yard. Less than a minute later, I saw him with a squirrel in his mouth. I ordered him to drop it, and it was already dead with some wounds on the underbelly and leg. My dog didn't have time to kill it, my husband said when we were gone there was a coyote at our back fence and he assumed the coyote attacked the squirrel and he made his way over or through the chain link and died in our yard. I picked up the dead squirrel with a shovel and heaved him over the back fence, sure enough, in a couple of hours I heard my dog barking, the coyote was walking away with the squirrel in his mouth, head cocked and chewing.

Oh my word!

I bet you all didn't know that Mr and Mrs Breeze are game wardens! :playful: :sentimental:

Yes Keesha, we had two otters that swam up and down our canal for a couple weeks than disappeared. When they saw me, standing by the fence, they would stop, and I swear they would stick their tongues out a me.

We have lots of deer come visit. That's my favorite. As for dislike... I'd put copperhead snakes at the top of the list. And as if one isn't bad enough, how'd you like to meet this bad boy?
