What's for dinner ( or lunch )

If this isn't a dumb question (or if it is), what's an express store???
It's a smaller store than the superstore..it sells just food , and no extra..like clothing etc... they're open from 6am until 10pm...in the local neighborhoods

Here outside of the US.. we hear of various supermarket chains ..like Walmart, Dollartree...Publix, Winco... etc.... we don't have those stores here... so I'm always curious to know what they sell ...or how big or small they are
I've heard that from those in some other countries. I was surprised to learn it actually. I saw a video a time ago that was a woman from here with a visiting friend from I think the UK and she took her to Walmart. It showed the woman in absolute shock at just the cereal aisle and selections of it in Walmart. I asked someone after seeing that how it was where they lived and they confirmed they'd maybe have a selection of three or four kinds of cereal. I was a bit shocked honestly, we have gotten so used to a big selection.

I see pluses and minuses to both. I personally hate shopping the big stores. It's an outright chore. I rely on delivery mostly just to avoid it or do an occasional pickup when the order has a lot, or bigger items.

Trader Joe's though smaller stores, is often a zoo from what I hear. It is quite popular with many.

We have a newer Costco and a couple of years ago, my mom and sister were visiting and the two of us here with them had shopped for the day and decided to check it out. My sister shops Costco (in her area) regularly but the rest of us had not been in one. Man was THAT a zoo. Five minutes in there was enough for all of us, even the sister who is used to such.

It certainly does up selection over what it was like when I was a kid which sounds a bit more like how you all have it, and it I guess ups competition somewhat to have so many but really to get the best price on all, you still have to go to several stores, imo anyhow.

Years ago, I stuck to KMart until they closed because the store was smaller than our new Wmart and it was just easier to park, get in and out and get the things one needed. Out of two grocery stores in town, I also stuck to the smaller one for the same reason. That is long gone now though.

I'm pretty curious myself about other countries and even our own states and how things differ. I think it's one great thing about the internet, that we can find those things out, compare things.

yes that's like Tesco or Sainsbury Superstore here.... and also that have ''Express stores'' which are smaller stores inthe suburbs that just sell food... not hardware or clothing etc...

Our supermarkets are big ( Hypermarkets) .... however I've been told by friends and family tht have visted the USA... that Walmart IS HUGE ! and much bigger than our Superstores!

We also of course have Costco....
So you do have some bigger ones? People I talked to didn't but then I don't think they lived in bigger cities. And you do have Costco? Huge like here?

Our rural areas and small towns can still be pretty limited with store choices.

Chains can also vary through the US, some aren't national as in located in every state but more regional.

we have small stores here in rural areas usually within a mile or 2 ..... but we're a tiny country so a Superstore is usually never further than 5 miles away ..and yes Costco is Enormous, but we don't have very many.... most people don't live within 50 miles of a Costco... I'm lucky I live between 2 ... which is rare ... only 20 mile drive to one.. and 15 the opposite way to the other !

That's not bad within five miles for something bigger for most people.

A property I sold a year or two ago was a good 40 minutes from anything bigger. When one wants privacy and lives rural, that's what we often deal with. It was ten miles just to a small grocery. I did have a gas station two miles away that carried just a few goods but at a ridiculously high price.

yes that's the problem when you live in a Huge country. When you live on a small Island country only the size of Oregon as we do.... with a population of almost 75 million... we need facilities to be very close..

It's just past 7pm so I'm thinking I will go and have the Minced beef Potatoes & veggies, that I defrosted yesterday that I batch cooked a few weeks ago... However I'm not really in the mood for it...

It's been a week, busy one. The first couple of days I had something made up I could rewarm and eat. Then I ran out of anything like that. I like to have a meal made up for most of the week, at least one, and I haven't had time to make another yet.

So I've been having to wing it. Today I had little time and I keep just one or two more convenience type things on hand for just such days. Otherwise, I usually cook, I don't do convenience stuff often.

I had had a microwave meal for lunch, many of them I won't bother with but I do like the Health Choice General Tso's with veggies and rice. It's great as is but I often add a tablespoon or two more of rice as there is enough sauce to bulk it up a bit more. This time I had some rice made up, other times I do one of the little microwave single serving cups of it. And then I like to sprinkle hot sauce on mine but I'm fine with it without too but since I have it, I prefer it spiced up a bit more.

Then tonight I have a Connie's frozen pizza. Never knew of the brand before but saw good reviews somewhere. I don't find most frozen pizzas worth it. So we will see. I guess one would call it a supreme, it has sausage, pepperoni, olives and onions I think. Black olives. It might be regional, I'm not sure, but did get it at Wmart. I forget the price but can look. Not the cheapest but not the most expensive either I don't think....

I also have my first bottle of hot honey ever. I watch a lot of cooking and food channels on YT and many rave about hot honey, a few of them with it on like pepperoni pizza. Others say on like spaghetti also. Various things. I'll just drizzle on part of a slice until I know I think it's good on there. I see a lot of raving about it and I guess I'll see if worth the hype.

Anyone else try any of these things?

I'll try to remember to report back on how it is.

Report on what I said having last night.

The frozen Connie's pizza was really good. The crust got nice and crisp and was good and the toppings, my goodness, it was loaded with sausage and pepperoni all over the top, no space basically, and small onion pieces and black olives. And the toppings were quality imo for a frozen pizza. I generally don't even care if I have meat on some frozen pizzas as it just isn't very good.

I did though I don't know, feel I couldn't taste the sauce or maybe it was so buried from a ton of good toppings?

I tried the hot honey for the first time. I just drizzled it on a bite or two of my first piece. Not impressed. And I like mixtures of sweet and spicy or sweet and salty and so on. What I got from it was overly honey like with a shaker of dried pepper in it or something. The bottle said it was honey and habaneros. The honey is just too much imo. I love honey, when I want honey and with the right mix. I do like an Asian sauce that has it and soy and vinegar and some spicy. That I love.

So now what do I do with the bottle of hot honey? I hate ditching food. I don't waste food if I can help it. It did not add anything in my opinion so I ate those couple of bites and then I went to no hot honey, and just red pepper added, far more my norm. I also opened some sauce to dip the pizza in as again it was great with toppings and stuff but didn't really get the sauce or taste it much. it was THERE, but again maybe not the right ratio for me.

It WAS good though. I will finish the rest. Not sure what to do with the hot honey. Not impressed.

Well I got my taxes done today and filed, such a relief, but because of the week I've had I have nothing made up which I prefer to have most of the time to just warm up. I do have some leftover rice though.

I did take out a pork chop earlier today thank goodness and as the day went I got a chance to marinade it in some brown sugar, soy sauce, balsamic, garlic and other seasonings. I intend to fry that and heat up some rice with probably a bit of soy sauce and sesame oil. Might add some veg to the rice, will see. It's already 6 and I have not done it yet, but the time change has me eating later.

I HOPE to make some spaghetti sauce this weekend and hopefully while I have things out for that some homemade meatballs that I will freeze. I don't care whether I have meatballs in the spaghetti sauce, I just do a mix of pork and beef, but since I will have them out for the sauce, I intend to use the rest to make meatballs which I hope to make Hawaiian meatballs with and if they are in the freezer I am more apt to do it if they are made up already.

Shall see how the weekend goes but hopefully I manage to do that all.

So seriously relived the taxes are done. I hate that deadline every year.

Tonight I made high quality pork & Onion sausages ( links)... with mashed potatoes & a red onion and beef gravy.... with a side of Carrot & Swede mash....
That sounds so yummy!!!

I made my chop and rice and it was good but then I see your post and think man that sounds even better.

I've had a lot going on lately, have to get back to making some things up ahead, etc.
