Deciding that we wanted breakfast for supper last night and were low on eggs and a few other things mama and I headed to Walmart yesterday afternoon.

Eggs were $7.27 per dozen !!.......these weren't special organic, range free eggs or laid by a golden chicken, just plain ol' eggs.

What's the deal with eggs being so high now all of a sudden ?

As far as I know, @IKE , they're blaming Avian Flu. Is that the only reason? I'm skeptical... sometimes it seems as if prices double or more just because "they can" and use the alarmingly high inflation rate as an excuse. Ours are averaging about $4.75/dozen... or were last week. Who knows for this week?

I held off buying them last week at my local grocery and planned on going to Aldi today. Geez! I though things were cheaper by the dozen.
Hopefully your Aldi is better than mine was last week according to my neighbor... Aldi regular eggs, $4.95... WalMart regular eggs, $4.75. I've always thought that the price of eggs was low (I mean when they were 99 cents not so very long ago!) but THIS is ridiculous. @Chet

Several chicken owners have said that right now the hens aren't laying eggs....don't know if it's the cold, the time of year or what. But they should start producing soon, and perhaps the prices will get down a bit. Also, the chickens that killed by disease, well, new chicklets have been bought and raised by now.

I had chickens for awhile years ago. I'm not sure if keeping chickens now would justify the cost. The chicken house (expensive), the fencing, the feed, the bedding material are all costs to be figured in. Not to mention how much I hate cleaning out the chicken house. And I have no where to put all the poop. A chicken poop compost pile wouldn't go over well in my neighborhood! And you can't put new chicken poop on a garden or it will burn out the plants. It has to age.

So, no chickens for me.

I have a nice spot for my own chickens, and have been thinking about it for a while. Guess I will....
I've thought about that too but have been concerned about all the wild life that will be after them.
Coyotes and raccoons can be a problem here, but I won't be letting them run loose. Only need 3-4 hens for my own use. I also have a big dog to help.

They won't lay much in the winter unless you keep then under lights a good portion of the day.

Those are jumbo in your link but still that is high, I saw med at walmart for around 5.00 I think not long ago.I was getting my eggs at walmart and it just got to high. I have a friend that has a friend and she has chickens, she is nice enough to sell a dozen for 3.00 and they are big eggs too. I feel so thankful as we could not buy them.

I'm perplexed, you didn't want to buy them from your friend?

They are not only high priced, there aren't any in some stores.
I was at Trader Joe's yesterday & there was a big empty space where the eggs were.

The local Dollar General in town (that I just came from) has a dozen white eggs for $3.95 a dozen. Only store around that hasn't raised their prices. I guess stores like Walmart, that have 18 eggs for $11, want to see just how many stupid people there are who will pay out a lot of money for eggs.

My supervisor at work, told me that the nearby Amish run store in nearby Fort Plain (NY) is selling a dozen brown eggs, for only $2.25 a dozen. That's where I will go next. But then again at those prices, they will probably sell out fast.

I just got a dozen Eggland's Best eggs, which are always very good quality, for $3.99 at my local supermarket. That's a pretty typical price.

millions culled...all over the world....problems also with obtaining feed...takes time to raise more lay hens ...you can easily freeze eggs...up to a year...we started back in August when we saw this coming...have over 24 dozen now...at $1.50/doz
