Whats you favor oatmeal??

Oh, jeez, yep I forgot about the maple syrup too -- only a tad of about a tablespoon or so. Not more than that. But let me say, it's only REAL maple syrup. Aunt Jemima and Mrs. Butterworth are not invited to breakfast in my house.
lol...same here!

Ugh. My last mouthful of oatmeal was om my 8th birthday. I remember sitting at the table, with it in my mouth, unable to swallow it for fear of my gag reflex coughing it right back up.

For the life of me, I will never understand how people can eat that stuff. The smell, the consistency. Blech.

It's like a bowl of vomit.

lol there are countless flavors . I buy the instant maple syrup tasting and great .

I ate plenty of McCann's Irish oats, steel-cut, (my father referred to them as "horse oats") but switched to Bob's Red Mill in 25lb bags. It's way cheaper and more convenient to have inventory in bulk, but the Irish oats taste slightly different, slightly better.

Prep is w water, salt, flax seed, frozen blueberries, and a whole almonds. The almonds supply some protein and of course blue berries for the blue food group.
I also buy Bob’s red mill steel cut oats. The only kind I use. I like that I can make it in my instant pot.

We have porridge ( in winter )as it’s called in our home …..I’ve got a tiny slow cooker and it’s on a timer so it’s cooked when we get up at 7.30 .

our favourite is a teaspoon of butter in our bowl before adding the porridge , brown sugar sprinkled over top ..that’s it for me , DH likes freshly grated nutmeg/ milk on his

I cook ours in half water/ half milk …1 cup of water …1 cup milk …3/4 cup rolled oats….plenty enough for both of us

How long does it take you to go through a 25 pound bag of rolled oats?
They are steel cut, not rolled. I use 45 grams per day so 25lbs is about a 250 day supply. In 250 days I might eat something other than oats 1x/month.

I often eat other breakfast foods(eggs) for lunch and even occasionally for dinner so its no big deal to have the oatmeal, and in fact, with additions I make to it keeps the hunger pangs away better than any other breakfast, for me.

I want the authentic Irish steel cut oats. I like it with honey, a pat of butter, and small amount of cream added. I will sometimes add blueberries or strawberries in season. Raisins are good as well.

I'm with you Lewkat. I cook two cups of it with 8 cups of water about once a week and we each have a bowl almost daily. We store it in pyrex lidded container and each heat our bowl of oatmeal in the microwave for a couple minute. Usually we have it with fresh fruit and for me a bit of low fat milk. But when I run out of milk I'll but a scoop of vanilla ice cream on it. Yum.

That's kinda my reaction to grits. Lots of people like to doctor that stuff up with butter, salt, pepper, eggs, cheese. In the end, grits look like yellowish pus.

No thanks.

Comparing Bob's Red Mill steel cut oats to any "rolled oats" would be like comparing a good tuna steak to canned tuna.

Rolled oats are reserved for making oatmeal cookies. ;)

Very interesting that folks have such strong opinions and preferences for such a prosaic food stuff. It's oatmeal.

YMMV

I always get what is termed here as "old-fashioned" oats - the type that needs to be cooked for several minutes.
Mix 3/4 cup oats with 11/3 cup water. Add a little salt and a tsp cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. Nuke for 3 to 4 minutes. Then I stir in a heaping tablespoon of peanut butter and 1/4 cup dark molasses. Not to everyone's taste, but it's the way I like it.
