When all is said and done

My maternal grandparents are an inspiration. They were married in 1900, both aged 18. There was a reason for that, Grandfather was a police officer, in his day police officers had what was called, a police house. It could be a purpose built house that came with a small police station, just a room annexed of the house, it could be a rented property or they could claim for a subsidised mortgage. However, that concession was only open to married officers. So when a vacancy for a village officer, complete with house, Grandfather went for it.

Both of my grandparents had to get parental permission to marry. Grandmother told me that her parents only gave their consent as long as they waited at least ten years before thinking of starting a family, and that's what they did.

Along with the rest of us, my Grandparents endured the death of my mother in 1956, aged just 33, but they went on together, and stayed together until my Grandfather died in 1980, four days after their 80th wedding anniversary, Grandmother died twelve weeks later.

My parents married when they were 16yrs old and only knew each other for 3 months prior to getting married. They were married for 63yrs when my Dad passed away. They were the best parents anyone could ask for and still had a deep love for one another.
