When did summer school become a reality?

Sounds like this was a common thing for most here. There was one girl in my graduating class that got held back a year because she had to repeat classes as she was out for an extended period due to illness. If she was held back, I don't think she was offered summer school if it was even available in out system back then. Even though she graduated a year later, she always considered herself a graduate of the 1970 class.

School is out for the summer - here it lets out at the end of June and resumes in early September. However, I still see school busses out and about. I asked at the library and was told it was for summer school students. We never had that BS when I was a kid. The last day of school, we all sang, "No more pencils, no more books, no more teacher's dirty looks." Why and what is "summer school"?

No wonder I have to pay almost $4000 a year in school taxes on my little bungalow.
We had summer school in the 50's, Deb, so I'm sure you had it (taxes and all), although you were probably unaware of it. From what I remember, summer school was sort of for remedial help for kids who needed a little extra push to get promoted to the next grade. Somewhere along the road it probably became bigger and more diverse.

It may have been different from one state to another.
