When you were a kid did you have fun playing with weeds, seeds and plants?

One of my earliest memories was blowing off the dried seeds from Dandelions.

We also made little curly things just for fun by taking the stem of the Dandelion, splitting it in four places and pressing down with our thumb.

We made whistles from leaves, holding them between our thumbs. I don't know how many Daisy's and Queen Anne's lace I brought to my Mom. She would put them in a glass of water with some food coloring and over a day or two the flowers would turn color.

I cut up the big pods from the Catalpa trees and made believe I was cooking beans.

I would help my Grandpa gather punks and then he dried them for the next year which he then lit to keep the mosquitoes away while we sat outside in the evening.

Then we played, he loves me,he loves me not,by pulling off the petals of a flower.

I remember when I got a little older I used a magnifying glass to burn holes in dry leaves. My Mom wasn't happy about that. lol

I'm sure there were more, I just can't remember them all. How many kids would be entertained by doing these things today? I bet not many.

We used to have fun with the exploding seed pods from Jewell Weed or Touch Me Not plants.

I just remember love me, love me not with flower petals, pulling the little stamens from Honeysuckle flowers and sucking off the sweet sap. Also putting little things that fell off trees on the end of my nose, can't remember what kind of tree or what we use to call them, but there was a name.

Oh Ike, that's terrible! What did they do to deserve that!

I don't remember doing that Aunt Bea, I don't think we had Jewell weed.

SeaBreeze we called them Polly Noses and they came from the Maple trees.

No Ruth. I think that was more of a girly thing to do. We boys were more into different activities; like

"Kick the Can" or making and walking on stilts etc.

Yes, I remember the Forget-Me-Not's....loves me, loves me not and a neighborhood boy who showed us how to burn bugs with a magnifying glass. Never did that, always thought it was cruel even for a bug:)

I used to sit in a patch of clover and make "jewelry" out of clover flowers... rings and chained necklaces.

My brother used to rub a fresh peach under my neck so that the fuzz irritated my skin...felt like fiberglass. He was charming but I love him anyhow.

I forgot boys didn't do those things. I do remember getting all dirty digging in the slimy clay so I could help the little boy across the street make shooters for his marble games. I think our stuff was more fun and cleaner.

We had cattails growing in the ditch behind our house. We'd break the pods open and scatter the "silk" all over the place.

And there were some sort of round pods that had spikes on them. It was really fun to throw those at someone you didn't like; of course you'd get them right back......OUCH! We had a crabapple tree and those made good projectiles, too.

We had a walnut tree, so there was a lot of cracking going on.

Flower chains were a girly thing to do and I was a genuine tomboy most of the time.

Yes, I loved flowers, vegetables, fruits and plants of any kind. Grandpa was a terrific gardener and taught me a lot. Grandma taught me how to water plants and when. Gotta love plants.
