When you were little, and sick.

My mum would always put me in her bed when I was sick. I don't remember the name of the medicine, but no matter what was wrong with me, she'd make me take a spoonful of some wretched tasting thick liquid from a brown bottle.

She would give me a hot water bottle to snuggle up to, and make a pot of weak tea which she'd serve me with milk and sugar, and a slice of buttered toast.

What did your folks do?

Depending on my age I kind of liked being sick. Got to stay home from school and just lay in bed and read. Also depended on what I had but my mom would have us bent over a steaming pot of water with a towel over us if congested.

usually had tea and toast or chicken soup.

One thing I hated was a green and very bitter pill, think it was called Coriciden. It was bitter even if you swallowed it whole.

Well, of course, there was Vicks Vaporub. Smeared liberally on the chest and then a hot flannel put on.

My mother dosed us with a patent medicine made right there in our city called WOW or Wonder of the World. It came in a small blue bottle and had eucalyptus oil and oil of cajuput and heaven knows what else. It was fantastic for croup, coughs, colds, and I believe could raise the dead. It had the most ghastly taste that you would burp up for hours. I will remember that taste to my dying day; I'm gagging now just thinking about it.

Campbell's Chicken with Stars soup was always the favored "sick" food.

If you were really sick, you got to sleep with Mom in the "big bed"; Pop moved to the couch for the duration.

I was brought up mainly by my Grand parents
and granny would say "there is nothing wrong
with you go out and play"!

Worked every time, after a few minutes I forgot
that I was feeling bad.

Mike.

Oh yes, all of the above; my parents bed, tea and toast, but no nasty medicine, only Pepto Bismal or Coke syrup if it was that kind of illness; Vicks and a vaporizer; flat ginger ale. The best parts were having the kitchen radio in the room, and my mother reading to me.

Yes, the Vick’s on my chest...forgot that.

Although i havent done it in a long time, I seldom get sick but Vick’s is my all time comfort smell.

i think I have some..maybe I’ll rub some on my chest tonight for old times sake.:)

I never had stomach illnesses so no Pepto...in fact I never even tried pepto until last year..now I have it just in case.

I don't remember what my mom gave me, but her and dad never let me miss one day of high school. If I coughed or sneezed just once, and they had any feeling that I was getting sick, some kind of medicine was going into me. Did I go to school sick? Heck, I don't even remember. All I do know what that I got an award at graduation for not missing a day of high school.

And, one thing for sure, the U.S. Navy sure didn't believe in any crew members getting sick. Basically speaking, a sailor or Officer simply worked thru the sickness. Nobody could "take the day off" due to sickness.

My mother would get me a new book to read or to color. I still remember getting the book "Heidi" once when I was sick.

I grew up with Vicks VapoRub! It was smeared on our chests, rubbed on our upper lip and under our noses, also melted in boiling water as a sort of vaporizer with a towel over our heads so we could breathe in the steam.

If we needed to swallow a pill when we were little it was hidden in a teaspoon of sugar with a drop of water or folded into a piece of spongy white bread.

When we were too sick to eat our mother made us a glass of eggnog, I still enjoy that when I'm not feeling well.

1 cup milk
1 large egg
1 tbsp. sugar
1/4 tsp. vanilla
grated nutmeg

Whirl in a blender and add a shot of booze if you are over 21. If you are concerned with eating raw eggs you might want to pass on this one.

I enjoyed being sick because it meant I could stay home from school which is a bad attitude for a young kid to develop. I was treated really well, especially by my Gran who would make all kinds of tasty things to get me to eat. Sometimes this would backfire when I was nauseated with the flu and I'd give it right back if that's not TMI.

When I was little and got a cold, mom would give me a bowl of Campbell's chicken noodle soup/crackers,also had ginger ale&toast
At night, dad would put the Vicks Vapo rub on my chest which felt wonderful
In my junior yr of high school,I remember I got a bad case of the flu.At first my folks didn't believe me when I said felt 'god awful', .I didn't last long that day because the school nurse called mom& told her 'your daughter needs to stay home',was out for 2 1/2 weeks
It was wonderful in the beginning, then had homework sent to me,towards the end I was ready to go back to school

Vaporizer, chicken soup, 7-Up. That always seemed to work. I didn't mind being ill, as long as I was watching TV, talking to my family, reading books and playing with my toys. My friends brought me my school work, if I missed more than two days, which only happened three times, through high school. Even now, I'm OK with not feeling 100%, as long as I can still get out and work.

I had chronic asthma as a child. Mom would put hot towels on my throat and chest and back, over the Vick's Vaporub, and I would have to take Buckley's Mixture .. smells like horse linament. I had a bad cold last winter, and actually bought the old Buckley's (that's how bad I felt). Chicken noodle soup and hot tea. I never felt good enough to watch t.v. I was laid out
flat, gasping for every breath. One time, when we were renting, our Chinese landlady made a potion for me to drink. Oh, it was so horrible tasting, but I was a polite child, so I drank it.
