Where do you shop?

Years ago, there was a butcher shop, a bakery shop, the cobbler, the pharmacy, the optician store, etc. Do you still go to those individual shops, or got to a mega store to do your business? Maybe there are shops that faded away and you remember them?

We have all those here within a few minutes drive from my house ( except the cobbler but we have one a few miles further) I use them all individually.. especially the Opticians , occasionally use the opticians and the bakers in the supermarket

I miss the independent Fishmongers and greengrocers.. but we can go to the street market for those twice a week in another town if necessary

There are still a few but most of them have quietly gone out of business or gone upscale/artisanal and lost something in the process.

Some of the ones that I miss the most were run by hardworking people that scrimped to send their children to good schools so they could become professionals of some sort and live in the suburbs. Also, the old neighborhoods changed and people like me only stopped in on holidays and special occasions.

Yes, we have all those kind of shops here: Butcher shop - no, I prefer my meat from the grocery store. Bakery is in-store too but I have gone to separate bakery for a cake. Cobbler (shoe repair) - usually my shoes, if still in decent shape) go to the Thrift store so I don't use the shoe place. Pharmacy is inside the grocery store. Optician is used as needed.

Sadly, most of our shopping is now done at one Supermarket (Publix) and Walmart. I'm still in Walgreens for some things too.

I have great memories of a small bakery in my grandparents' hometown. They had huge cakes on display in the windows, and the aroma when you went inside was divine. We didn't go in often, but it was a special treat to go for one of their delicious orange cupcakes. If I close my eyes and concentrate, I can still smell that first whiff of baking you always got when opening the door. The store closed many years ago, but in my mind, it's still there.

When Dave was working and he wore wingtip shoes, maybe 30 years ago, I would take them to be resoled at our local saddle maker/cobbler. I also had him make hand tooled belts for my girls and myself. He was a true artisan. His saddles were also a work of art.

I miss family owned businesses. Walmart wiped most of them out in small town America. I loved the cobbler's shop and the local hardware shop growing up.

I shop now at Kroger, Walmart and occasionally Whole Foods for groceries, Walmart for paper goods and basic clothing/undies. CVS for RX and OTC meds, glasses from Amazon (so far only need readers), nicer clothing from JJill, Sundance. I've started shopping for clothes a good bit on Poshmark ...can get great deals on higher end clothing that sometimes is new with tags.

Johnny's Grocery Store in 1947, keep a hundred pound bag of Pinto Beans open, he would scoop out and bag however many pounds the
customer wanted.
Robert, two years older than me, told me how to get free Pinto Beans for our Pea Shooters.
'Just scoop up a handful and stick them in your pocket.'
I did, and Johnny caught me red handed.
'What do you have in your hand.'
'Nothing.'
Then the lecture,'You want to be a criminal...?'

Robert already had a handful of Pinto Beans in his pocket, he split out the door
The next time Dad went to Johnny's, he snitched me off.

Moral: If your going to shoplift, it is best to have a penny or so to purchase an item. Going in naked, wthout any money alerts the owner
that your up to no good.
