Where to spend hogmanay, (this is the question!)?

It has been a Pipedream of mine for many years to try to spend new years eve in Scotland, (so just about 100 miles away from where I live).

However a poor weather forecast affecting those travelling no doubt, as well as those revelling in Glasgow or Edinburgh, has put me off yet again, (plus all the other sensible reasons for not going, like the fact I hardly drink strong liquor these days).

However, a lot can be achieved enjoying hogmanay closer to home obviously, so there are options, and if it fails to delight you can always come home to your own bed.

Any exciting plans for a shindig or whatever? :)
 

No. We're done with NYE parties now although in the past we celebrated with a shindig that involved a lot of neighbours and a keg of beer plus more exotic drinks for the women. They were all age events with the kids despatched to bed after midnight. Some fell asleep behind the lounge well before then.

If the keg was still not empty the men gathered around it the next morning to finish it off. Even the garbos would leave their rounds to have a drink or three, much to the frustration of their bosses and the ire of their wives.

No can do that anymore, and just as well. 🥴
 
It used to be a big thing with my parents, but I've never really bothered with it. There used to be a Hogmanay party in the village hall here, but that seems to have disappeared too.

I do remember the millennium street party in Edinburgh being the best in the world in my opinion, and the one occuring a few hours earlier in Sydney, Australia coming a close second.
Let's hope not all that spirit has not dissipated in the years since those events, (I'm sure not really!). :)
 
It's been a good 2/3 years since I celebrated, the last one was celebrated on Sydney harbor in a large boat we rented for two days, needles to say we all got legless, the fireworks were absolutely amazing.

I know what you mean Graham, I am too old to even think
about driving North, felt like this for a few years, so, since
the TV here is not very good, I started watching Alba TV, it
is a BBC Channel and mainly in Gaelic, with subtitles for we
who don't have the Gaelic, but their New Year's Eve shindig
is for everybody, plus it is in English.

Their 2019 or 2020 show is available on YouTube, unfortunately
I can't find the one that was thinking about, it was 2 hours long!

Once upon a time, it would have been off to Trafalgar Square. Those days you could just wander down and join the crowds to see the New Year in. We had some great times there but, I know it was cancelled during Covid and no idea if people bother now. New Year's eve was a big thing when we were younger, there was always a party to go to but, those days are gone and now it is a glass of wine at home, a few WhatsApp messages and counting the minutes to midnight. :)
 
Graham, if you ever find yourself in Glasgow, get along to The Old Fruit Market. It was once the city's wholesale fruit and veg market, now beautifully restored, but the names of the traders have been retained. We have been there a couple of times, it's just fabulous.
 
I used to fly up to Glasgow and book in to the hotel
at the Airport, you need to book in advance, they had
Party in the ballroom that started about 8 o'clock and
carried on into the wee small hours, it was always very
good, I did that for 3 or 4 years.
