Where were you when Armstrong landed on the moon?

I was on a 30 day temporary assignment from Hawaii to Okinawa, Japan.

It was miserably hot and humid, and I got to experience my first Typhoon.

Coverage of the event on Armed Forces TV was pretty good, .... and commercial free.

I was 22 years old, an spending a Sunday at Salisbury Beach (in MA) with my sister. We had hiked along the beach and out to the state reservation. We noticed a group of people listening to a transistor radio, and a teen-aged boy ran over and told us about the moon landing. My sister, then 16 years old, displayed great excitement and interest, which surprised me because she typically had no interest in current events. It didn't take me long to realize that it was the good-looking boy, and not the moon landing, that caught her Attention.

I remember it so clearly because she ended up dating him for 2 years, and he took her to her senior prom!

I think it's sad that people who were at least 3 yrs old at the time, were not told about the importance of that day. My 3 yr old doesn't remember saying what he said, but he sure remembers being outside on the lawn with his Mom that night looking at the moon. I'm thankful for the wonderful memory we both have of that night.

I was a Corpsman in the Eye Clinic, at Bethesda Naval Hospital. One of the doctors brought in a small portable TV. We kept seeing patients, and taking turns running back to see what was going on.
We all thought it was an eventful, historic day. The patients, who were watching thought so too. I think if you were a kid, back then, you were just so self involved, like most normal kids at that age; the event didn't mean much to you.

Well, some parents take an interest in their kids- and some don't. :(

Glad to hear you and your son have nice memories- both to enjoy at the time and to look back on. :)

I too, brought my 3 yr. old son an along with my parents, we sat glued to the T.V. watching this monumental event. My father had tears running down his cheeks as he and my mom used to listen to Buck Rogers and the 21st Century on the radio when they were first married. He never believed he'd live to see the day when something of this importance would take place. My son doesn't remember it, but he has always been interested in space exploration.

Good grief people! It just occurred to me that little boy of mine will soon be eligible for Senior discounts!! Cripe, I guess that settles it now. I'm officially an old broad. I will never say elderly, not ever.
How about just senior?
It sound a lot nicer than ‘old broad.’

Can I claim heat stroke?
Hot flash?
Dementia or mental insanity?
I know exactly where I was when it happened but read the first post wrong and thought maybe that I’d gotten the dates all mixed up or didn’t quite understand the question. My parents bought a new television for us to watch it on which I believe was a coloured tv. It WAS a really big deal here! We were all glued to the tv for about a week.

I was in Picadilly Circus in London. A young man floated by in flowing silky white pants and top chanting over & over "They've landed on the Moon." Thrilled and excited by the event.

When Walter spoke ... we listened.

Thanks so much for posting that video Bonnie. It gave me chills this afternoon, just like it did then. I'll also never forget WC taking off his glasses like that and we all exhaled right along with him. My husband and I were 23 yrs old at the time and I knew I had to make it clear to our 3 yr old he was living a day in history nobody would ever forget.

I was 6 years old and don't remember anything related to the event, nor do I remember mom and dad watching it on television.

I sure do like all things space, now! Can't get enough of it.

My then husband and I were attending a meeting of the VFDA at the Greenbrier Hotel in White Sulpher Springs, WV and saw it at the small movie theater in the hotel. Hubbie was not very interested because just at the important step, he snored lightly. He had fallen asleep.

 That's too funny Gennie..I think I would have kicked him. Geeze he was a young man then, does he still fall asleep at the worst times like my DH does now? Oh golly, I hope you still have him now. If not, please accept my apology.

I was packing to join my husband in Turkey, living temporarily at my parents' home.

My grandmother loved to make special occasion cakes, so she made a "moon landing cake". It looked like the surface of the moon, complete with moon rocks made of marzipan and craters. She had even built a moon lander out of toothpicks and silver icing. It was a work of art, but we ate it anyway.
