I was branch Leading Petty Officer (LPO) at Fleet Combat Training Center Atlantic (FCTCLANT), in Dam Neck Virginia.
That day I was "on the stick" ... teaching a group of sailors in a classroom environment.
One of the other instructors who wasn't teaching that day, came to the classroom and informed us of the unfolding events.
I dismissed the students for the day and watched the horror on TV with other staff members and Officers.
The USS John F Kennedy CV-67 (pictured) would be the fourth and last ship I served aboard.
My last visit to New York City was in 2005 for Fleet Week.
There we met up with the Marines we supported with flight cover during their campaign in Fallujah.
Prior to 9/11 and on an earlier visit to "The City", I'd gone to top of one of the towers.
The view was absolutely amazing. Off to the left (from atop the tower) and in the distance, the Statue of Liberty looked tiny.
And although the statue appeared small, it was and still is a patriotic inspiration.
