Which Gift Would A Little Girl Rather Have?

I just hate it when someone asks for your advice and then gets huffy when they don't like your answer. A friend was showing me a picture of a hand made wooden dollhouse, very very expensive with no furniture in it. The workmanship was great in the picture, but I felt it was something of a throwback from years ago, something a little girl at the turn of the century would own.

I told her that I thought that for a fraction of the price she could get a Barbie Dreamhouse complete with furniture and a swimming pool with all the bells and whistles. Spending over $500.00 for the wood one was something she might reconsider.

A bit snarky she told me that since I never had kids "what did I know" and snarky me back replied that the little girl in me would love the Barbie and use the wood one for fire starter.

OK then, those of you with kids weigh in, what would your little darling grand love to find under the tree.

And come to think of it, the monstrosity would not even fit under a tree.
LOL good grief she asked for advice and was nasty when she didn't like your answer. I think the handmade house is something only adults, maybe teens would appreciate but not little girls...Sounds like she is just trying to impress others with little thought for the girl.. ..and that is sad

The wooden one is something that I'd like to have, with the idea of gradually furnishing it with some of the amazing collectable miniature furniture I've seen. Of course, I'm looking at it from an adult perspective. My granddaughter, age almost-eight, votes for the Barbie dream house.

I had one of those metal doll houses and played with it for years! Loved it!

Then I got a construction set of little plastic "bricks" that were meant to build houses, etc., complete with doors that would swing open and windows that opened. I built house after house with those bricks and I figure that contributed to making me such an addict to HGTV later in life.
Ooooh! I would have loved that! I used to lay out house plans with my dominoes and later with my dad's drafting board.

My husband looked over my shoulder at the latest Barbie house and was quite taken with the swimming pool, then I showed him Gary's garage and he was transported. This Christmas might bring on our second childhood.

@Lee I'm extremely sorry for that highly inappropriate comment that you got back. The individual apparently forgot she actually asked.

I'm wondering if what this woman was speaking of was similar to this Etsy search?

Waldorf wooden dollhouse - Etsy

You have a couple of things to consider. Handmade vs. made in China. (Though etsy is having major resellers on their site.) Price of course. If someone has plenty of extra income. I don't have any kids either but I do think a child may be more interested in the bright colors and all. Though I find some of these doll houses in the search adorable.
It was fun and interesting to me, looking at those. Thanks for posting that link.:)
The folding one caught my eye, personally. What a great idea that was! I also personally liked the other open concept, simpler ones. I agree with the post about imagination!

As for the questions in the OP, I think it would depend also on what the child's individual specific surrounding environment is. One with friends and siblings with lots of colorful plastic toys and barbies, etc, versus one who perhaps homeschools, and therefore doesn't judge items by the same comparisons. Or if a child is surrounded by people who do arts and crafts, create home-made gifts, etc.
I am curious if anyone makes corresponding miniatures of apartment building homes and families?:geek::love:

Best thing I owned when I was a kid. Had to share it with my brothers, but that was all for the better when our "enemies" encroached on our territory.

I'd love to own one now. What a fantastic place that would be to hang out in all day. Big problem would be getting up there and chillin' without getting vertigo and fallin'.
Close your eyes and enjoy having one in your imagination! :giggle::):geek:☺️

I'm with you Lee, I would choose the Barbie for the girl. Like you, I've never had children either, but I was after all, a little girl once upon a time. If the older, more expensive wooden house had furniture, dolls, pictures, pets, appliances, blankets, curtains, etc., then I would have opted for that. But unfurnished, no way. The gift is for the child, not for the older person giving it, in my opinion.
