Which song lyrics have meaning to you?

Gardenlover

The world needs more love
Here is just one of mine

"Last Chance" by Shooting Star
Stand up on your feet
'Cause your life is short as hell.
You could be dead tomorrow.
Today may be your last chance to believe in yourself.
Your last chance to yell.
Your last chance to be good to yourself.
Your last chance to drink from life's well.

When the rain is blowing in your face
And the whole world is on your case
I could offer you a warm embrace
To make you feel my love

[Verse 2]
When the evening shadows and the stars appear
And there is no one there to dry your tears
I could hold you for a million years
To make you feel my love

I know you haven't made your mind up yet
But I will never do you wrong
I've known it from the moment that we met
No doubt in my mind where you belong

[Verse 3]
I'd go hungry, I'd go black and blue
I'd go crawling down the avenue
Know there's nothing that I wouldn't do
To make you feel my love

The storms are raging on the rollin' sea
And on the highway of regret
The winds of change are blowing wild and free
You ain't seen nothing like me yet

[Verse 4]
I could make you happy, make your dreams come true
Nothing that I wouldn't do
Go to the ends of the earth for you
To make you feel my love
To make you feel my love

It's My Life by Bon Jovi

This ain't a song for the broken-hearted
No silent prayer for faith-departed

And I ain't gonna be just a face in the crowd
You're gonna hear my voice when I shout it out loud

It's my life
It's now or never
But I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said, "I did it my way"
I just want to live while I'm alive
It's my life

Yeah, this is for the ones who stood their ground
For Tommy and Gina, who never backed down

Tomorrow's getting harder, make no mistake
Luck ain't even lucky, got to make your own breaks

It's my life
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said, "I did it my way"
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life

Better stand tall when they're calling you out
Don't bend, don't break, baby, don't back down

It's my life
And it's now or never
'Cause I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said, "I did it my way"
I just want to live while I'm alive

(It's my life)
And it's now or never
I ain't gonna live forever
I just want to live while I'm alive
(It's my life)
My heart is like an open highway
Like Frankie said, "I did it my way"
I just want to live while I'm alive
'Cause it's my life

Well some look forever
For some maybe never
They live for the moment
Day by day

But I'll always treasure
Our times together
Cause you made me see it
You made me say it...

Where have been all my life?

(The bridge from another one of my songs) :)

Mind Gardens ( Byrds )

Once upon a time there was a garden on a high hill
Green and bluffin' 'round against the sea
And there the sun came
And the rain pourin' down
Garden grew and flourished
And splattered bits of color on the ground
And it took shape and symmetry and all of life around
But there came winds, driven and howling
There came snow and I feared for the garden
So I built a wall and I built another
And roofed it over thick and strong
And kept it from the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune
The killing cold could not get in
But when the sun came
And the gentle rain of spring
They could not reach the garden behind those walls
It would have died
Safely, securely, died
But as I longed and as I learned
I tore the walls all down
The garden still lives

The garden lives

Just as I am - without one plea,
But that Thy blood was shed for me,
And that Thou bidst me come to Thee,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - and waiting not
To rid my soul of one dark blot,
To Thee, whose blood can cleanse each spot,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - though toss'd about
With many a conflict, many a doubt,
Fightings and fears within, without,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - poor, wretched, blind;
Sight, riches, healing of the mind,
Yea, all I need, in Thee to find,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - Thou wilt receive,
Wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relieve;
Because Thy promise I believe,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - Thy love unknown
Has broken every barrier down;
Now to be Thine, yea, Thine alone,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Just as I am - of that free love
The breadth, length, depth, and height to prove,
Here for a season, then above,
-O Lamb of God, I come!

Solsbury Hill
Song by Peter Gabriel

Climbing up on Solsbury Hill
I could see the city light
Wind was blowing, time stood still
Eagle flew out of the night

He was something to observe
Came in close, I heard a voice
Standing, stretching every nerve
I had to listen, had no choice

I did not believe the information
Just had to trust imagination
My heart going "Boom-boom-boom"
"Son, " he said
"Grab your things, I've come to take you home"
Hey, back home

To keep in silence I resigned
My friends would think I was a nut
Turning water into wine
Open doors would soon be shut

So I went from day to day
Though my life was in a rut
'Til I thought of what I'd say
Which connection I should cut

I was feeling part of the scenery
I walked right out of the machinery
My heart going "Boom-boom-boom"
"Hey, " he said
"Grab your things, I've come to take you home"
Hey, back home

When illusion spin her net
I'm never where I wanna be
And liberty, she pirouette
When I think that I am free

Watched by empty silhouettes
Who close their eyes but still can see
No one taught them etiquette
I will show another me

Today I don't need a replacement
I'll tell them what the smile on my face meant
My heart going "Boom-boom-boom"
"Hey, " I said
"You can keep my things, they've come to take me home"

"WHY" by Rascal Flatts. 😭

You must've a been in a place so dark, couldn't feel the light
Reachin' for you through that stormy cloud
Now here we are gathered in our little home town
This can't be the way you meant to draw a crowd

Oh why, that's what I keep askin'
Was there anything I could have said or done
Oh I, had no clue you were masking a troubled soul, God only knows
What went wrong, and why you'd leave the stage in the middle of a song

Now in my mind I keep you frozen as a seventeen year old
Roundin' third to score that winning run
You always played with passion no matter what the game
When you took the stage you shined just like the sun

Oh why, that's what I keep askin'
Was there anything I could have said or done
Oh I, had no clue you were masking a troubled soul, God only knows
What went wrong, and why you'd leave the stage in the middle of a song

Now the oak trees are swayin' in the early autumn breeze
The golden sun is shining on my face
The tangled thoughts I hear a mockingbird sing
This old world really ain't that bad a place

Oh why there's no comprehending
And who am I to try to judge or explain
Oh, but I do have one burning question
Who told you life wasn't worth the fight
They were wrong
They lied
And now you're gone
And we cried
'Cause It's not like you, to walk away in the middle of a song
Your beautiful song
Your absolutely beautiful song

Looking back
On the memory of
The dance we shared
'Neath the stars above
For a moment
All the world was right
But how could I have known
That you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end
The way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance
I could have missed the pain
But I'd have had to miss the dance

This one, for a very long time

King of The Road

Moreso after riding the rails in my younger daze

Trailer's for sale or rent
Rooms to let, 50 cents
No phone, no pool, no pets
I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin' broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road
Third boxcar, midnight train
Destination Bangor, Maine
Old, worn out suit and shoes
I don't pay no union dues
I smoke old stogies I have found
Short, but not too big around
I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road
I know every engineer on every train
All of their children, and all of their names
And every handout in every town
Every lock that ain't locked, when no one's around
I sing, trailers for sale or rent
Rooms to let, 50 cents
No phone, no pool, no pets
I ain't got no cigarettes
Ah, but, two hours of pushin' broom
Buys an eight by twelve four-bit room
I'm a man of means by no means
King of the road

Everybody Needs a Friend - Wishbone Ash '73

Trust in me, I'll try to do
Everything to help you that I can
Broken wings can heal and mend again
Don't be afraid to cry your tears out loud
Everybody needs to have a friend

It's only love that I can give
And I give to you the only love I have
When I see you're so unhappy
It makes me want to try and understand
Everybody needs a helping hand

If everything should turn around
And it's me who feels so down and out
You could be the kind of company
To share a load and know how bad it feels
Everybody needs to have a friend

"Long Way Home"

Oh, it's cold and lonely here?
Here in this telephone booth

There's three sides to every story babe:
There=s yours and there=s mine and the cold, hard truth
I think there's something missing 'round here
I don't know where it's gone
But it's a long way back home

Next Lifetime by Erykah Badu (partial words)

Oh what am I supposed to do when I want you in my world?
How can I want you for myself when I'm already someone's girl?
I guess I'll see you next lifetime; no hard feelings,
I guess I'll see you next lifetime; I'm gon' be there.

Your energy, feels so damn good to me,
It picks me up, don't want to come down
Got me spinning all around
You need to know, I got somebody but
Your beautiful
But still it ain't that type of party

There ain't nothin' wrong with dreamin'
But Boy don't get me wrong
Cause every time I see you,
It lets me know how strong
That my love is for my baby,
But emotions just don't lie
Well I know I'm a lot of woman,
But not enough to divide the pie

Oh what am I supposed to do when I want you in my world?
How can I want you for myself when I'm already someone's girl?
I guess I'll see you next lifetime.

"Moonage Daydream"

I'm an alligator
I'm a mama-papa coming for you
I'm a space invader
I'll be a rock-'n'-rolling bitch for you
Keep your mouth shut
You're squawking like a pink monkey bird
And I'm busting up my brains for the words

Keep your 'lectric eye on me, babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream, oh yeah

Don't fake it, baby
Lay the real thing on me
The church of man, love
Is such a holy place to be
Make me, baby
Make me know you really care
Make me jump into the air

Keep your 'lectric eye on me, babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream, oh yeah, yeah

Keep your 'lectric eye on me, babe
Put your ray gun to my head
Press your space face close to mine, love
Freak out in a moonage daydream, oh

Keep your 'lectric eye on me, babe
(Keep your 'lectric eye on me, babe)
('Lectric eye on me babe)
Put your ray gun to my head
(Put your ray gun to my head)
(Ray gun to my head)
Press your space face close to mine, love
(Press your space face close to mine, love)
(Press your space face close to mine, love)
Freak out in a moonage daydream, oh yeah
(Freak out in a moonage daydream, oh yeah)
(Freak out in a moonage daydream
Oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah, oh yeah...)

Freak out (Freak out, freak out, freak out, freak out...)
Far out (Far out, far out, far out, far out...)
In out (In out, in out, in out, in out...)

A bit off the OP's topic.

My only real interest in music has been with Classic Rock. Was recently thinking about how I often don't understand the intent of rock song lyrics and tend to hijack such music for my own purposes. Oh, sure, I do understand meaning in many obvious songs and actually have lyric text listings of the 200+ song lyrics on my MP3 player that I have occasionally looked at. But for the most part, I don't clearly understand meanings in many rock songs, nor really care, and just hijack words for the intensity of feeling and emotion of my own inspiring purposes like dancing to powerful tunes.

Jim Morrison talked about how some of The Doors lyrics were purposely vague so listeners could add their own meaning to what they heard. Of those with obvious meaning, one of my favorites by Lynyrd Skynyrd:

"Simple Man"

Mama told me when I was young
"Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely to what I say
And if you do this it'll help you some sunny day"

"Oh, take your time, don't live too fast
Troubles will come and they will pass
You'll find a woman and you'll find love
And don't forget, son, there is someone up above"

"And be a simple kind of man
Be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"

"Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"

"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can"

Oh, yes, I will

"Boy, don't you worry, you'll find yourself
Follow your heart and nothing else
And you can do this, oh baby, if you try
All that I want for you, my son, is to be satisfied"

"And be a simple kind of man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can?"

"Baby, be a simple, be a simple man
Oh, be something you love and understand
Baby, be a simple kind of simple man
Oh, won't you do this for me, son, if you can?"

The living years

Every generation
Blames the one before
And all of their frustrations
Come beating on your door
I know that I'm a prisoner to all my father held so dear
I know that I'm a hostage, to all his hopes and fears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
More crumpled bits of paper
Filled with imperfect thought
Stilted conversations
I'm afraid that's all we've got
You say you just don't see it, he says it's perfect sense
You just can't get agreement, in this present tense
We all talk a different language, talking in defence
(Say it loud) say it loud (say it clear) oh, say it clear
(You can listen as well as you hear)
(It's too late) it's too late (when we die) oh, when we die
(To admit we don't see eye to eye)
So we open up a quarrel
Between the present and the past
We only sacrifice the future
It's the bitterness that last
So don't yield to the fortunes, you sometimes see as fate
It may have a new perspective, on a different day
And if you don't give up, and don't give in, you may just be OK
So say it, say it, say it loud (say it loud)
(Say it clear) oh, say it clear
(You can listen) as well as you hear
Because it's too late (it's too late)
It's too late (when we die) oh, when we die
(To admit) we don't see eye to eye
I wasn't there that morning
When my father passed away
I didn't get to tell him
All the things I had to say
Think I caught his spirit, later that same year
I'm sure I heard his echo in my baby's new born tears
I just wish I could have told him in the living years
So say it, say it, say it loud (say it loud)
(Say it clear) come on say it clear
(You can listen) as well as you hear
(It's too late) it's too late
(When we die) it's too late when we die
(To admit we don't see eye to eye)
Hey, so say it, say it, say it loud (say it loud)
Say it loud (say it clear) come on say it clear
(Say it loud, say it clear) don't give up, don't give in, and don't look back 'til it's too late
Come on say it (say it loud) say it loud, say it loud
Songwriters: Brian David Robertson, Michael Rutherford

Take a Picture by Filter.

Resonated on a deep level.
Getting drunk, losing control, being sad and all alone.
Deliberately pushing people away so I could wallow in my own worthlessness.
I am sure my father was saddened that I had taken after him. Almost the town drunk
Eventually the drink beat me (as it beat my father who died from alcoholic poisoning).
I was forced to stop drinking or go the same way as my father and brother. An early death.
Then the line - "Hey Dad, what do you think about your son now"?
Having beat the demon drink I got my life together and have now been alcohol free for 23 years.
Life is okay and although I will have to work until retirement age, another 5 years, to make enough money to bypass destitution.
I am in a good place right now.
Hey Dad, what do you think about your son now?

Awake on my airplane
Awake on my airplane
My skin is bare
My skin is theirs
Awake on my airplane
Awake on my airplane
My skin is bare
My skin is theirs

I feel like a newborn

Awake on my airplane
Awake on my airplane
I feel so real
Could you wanna take my picture?
'Cause I won't remember
Could you wanna take my picture?
'Cause I won't remember

Yeah

I don't believe in
I don't believe in
Your sanctity
Your privacy
I don't believe in
I don't believe in
Sanctity
A hypocrisy

Could everyone agree that
No one should be left alone?
And I feel like a newborn

Kicking and screaming

Could you wanna take my picture?
'Cause I won't remember
Could you wanna take my picture?
'Cause I won't remember

Yeah

Hey, Dad
What do you think about your son now?
Ah, hey, Dad
What do you think about your son now?

Could you wanna take my picture?
'Cause I won't remember
Could you wanna take my picture?
'Cause I won't remember
Could you wanna take my picture?
'Cause I won't remember
Yeah
