A and P markets, Acme, Grants, Sears Roebuck, Fishmans dept store< Woolworths, Montgomery Wards and a lot more in our town. Main Street is now antique shops and pizza places, plus empty. The big box stores wiped out downtown.

I remember Orange Julius. I just had to buy a drink when we were in San Antonio. Delish!!!Orange Julius had an open air juice stand, could get a good-sized one for 10 cents (HA!)
also remember the oriental grocery; the gentleman gave me an almond cookie when I came with my mom
I had forgotten Tangee lipstick, there was a cheap perfume in a pretty blue bottle as well at about 15 cents.b
YES!I remember watching with amazement as the old style Cash carrier tube system.. ( don't know it's real name )... was in action..
A good one. The original JC Penney store was in Kemmerer, Wyoming. It's still there called the JC Penny Mother Store. No longer any connection to JC Penney, but still an interesting stop. On the outside chance you are ever in Kemmerer...JC Penney store
first encountered Newberry's when i went away to college... Stroudsburg, PA.Seems Woolworth's was worldwide, or close to it. When I visited my Aunt, we often went there.
In a different location- Newberry's. I didn't know it was a chain. They had everything: clothes, records, cosmetics, tropical fish, etc., and a nice little cafe.
Another, farther away, was a discount department store called Jamesway.
For food/groceries: Grand Union, Freihofer's, A&P, the Victory.
My wife STILL has a London Fog raincoat that she bought from Woodward's in Vancouver in 1980. At that time she was a graduate student at UBC. JimB.Woolworth's, Eatons, Simpson-Sears, Kresge's. In Vancouver, Woodward's.
Do you remember when Eaton's was the sole seller of Boy Scouts of Canada uniforms and equipment ? Everything from the uniforms, sleeping bags and official folding pocket knife ? And of course their own line of radios and TV's called Viking. Jimb.Woolworths, Eatons and the corner store for candy.
I had a similar situation, but I DID eat the chocolate bar after I left the store. My Mum found out and dragged me back there, to apologize to the store manager, I was 9. When I was 16 I got a job there stocking shelves, for that same manager, Mister Hicks. A nice man who treated me just fine, and who gave me an excellent letter of support when I graduated from HS, and was applying for my first full time job. JimB.88 Cent Store and Payless. Payless was where I just about stole a gum ball from an opened container near the Mickey Mouse Gumball Machine. I had it in my hand heading for my mouth but something or somebody invisible stopped me. Then I went over to look at the posters on the rack.
