Who agrees? The only good thing about Jazz...it scores highly in Scrabble

I hate it. But not as much as I hate rap.
My question is...do you hate it all? There are so many forms of Jazz. Just like Jazz, there are different forms of Rap that are not promoted as highly as Gangsta Rap.(believe me, there's a reason for that). I learned about that and to appreciate Rap when my son became interested in it and started writing and producing positive Rap songs with his BFF and group members. I managed one of those groups for a while. I learned to appreciate some artists who's raps were educational. But between me, you and the wall...I hate Jamaican Rap.

This is about as far as I go with Jazz.

Brings back memories of being in nightclubs in the 80s with my GF. And in the early hour of Sunday morning finding a really quiet room upstairs in the club with its own separate bar, where we could wind down on a leather sofa while listening to Sade:

Hey B....do you like Classical music? Here's a Jazz-Classical fusion that I think is brilliant. The Beaux Arts String are featured. I'd be interested to know if you like it or any part of it.

Wonderful, better musically than other jazz reworks of classical pieces, although I do like others too like the work of this group. But their work feels less jazzy to me, less open ended.

I really struggle with jazz, mainly because most of what I hear takes me a long time to figure out where the tune is.

Songs with some jazz influences I'm ok with though.

No offense intended, but this is an error in the listener. :D

This is why you need to learn to appreciate Jazz. We grow up in a world dominated by Pop and Rock music (among other genres). The form of this music is melody, verse, chorus, melody, verse, chorus, bridge, chorus. It becomes second nature to us, because it's everywhere all the time.

Jazz can have this, but it's not all it has. It's the performance, the interplay of instruments, and more. Which is why, likely, it's considered more "high brow". The truth is, you have to unlearn some of your music listening habits and to subvert expectations to truly get there.

Thanks for that explanation. I will be sure to give it the proper consideration.

Put another way - the structure of Jazz of most jazz music is different from the one we're indoctrinated with. You must overcome that familiarity to truly get to appreciate what's going on.
