Who feels guilty about eating meat?

Humans are predators. Our eyes face forward to zero in on prey. Preys' eyes face sideways to see predators coming from all sides. That's evolution. Humans sit high on the food chain. It's impossible to eat plants and animals without ending their lives. Humans can also show compassion, which can cause qualms about eating certain animals. We don't eat "cow", we eat beef, we don't eat "pig," we eat pork. But, we also love meat, compassion aside.
My ex decided to become a vegetarian, as she hated killing cattle. This was in the 1980's & 90s, and there were few vegetarian restaurants, back then. I can't tell you the hours we spent trying to find one when we had road trips. All the time, she was sneaking down to McDonalds for her hamburger "fix". Being human doesn't mean making sense.

I stopped eating beef and pork decades ago. I still eat chicken now and then.

Like you, @Old Salt , my conscience got to me. I would like to stop eating chicken, as I've read/seen some
awful footage of how they are sometimes treated.

I wouldn't call it over-sensitivity. It's compassion.
I respect your beliefs but do not understand why it's ok to eat chicken but not cows and pigs?? I agree chickens are abused in many cases and now buy only cage-free, free range. I eat all animal protein and do not feel there is anything wrong with doing so...I also wonder why some are ok with eating beef and pork but oppose horse meat.

As I have stated, I respect everyone's beliefs and choices for food. Anyone willing to discuss, I would be interested in hearing why anyone feels guilty about eating one animal but not another. I agree humane practices should always be maintained. If we want to take this further, scientists have also discovered plants have feelings..so now we could have another dilemma in our food choices...

I think about the mercury warnings and limit fish consumption. I love Salmon and tuna
I like Tuna, but rarely have it... I like smoked salmon and smoked trout... which I have probably once a month.. When I lived in Spain, Swordfish was really cheap... you could get a pound steak, for about 50 cents... .. and so I use to eat it a couple of times a week..'till I found. out that it carries the highest Mercury of all fish... I've never eaten it since

I kept and loved horses most of my life, and managed a horse rescue for years. It won't bother me if people eat them as long as it is done humanely. Then, some horses are injured and NEED to be put down, so do it without chemicals and feed the poor. And yes, chickens have feelings too, and even make pretty affectionate pets. And it has been said, even carrots scream when you pull them.
