Who Is To Blame Here, Me Or Her?

Why are people so reluctant to use their phones for the purpose it is intended?. A text cannot always take the place of an actual phone call.
 

Loaning items to people never turns out well. She is in the wrong not respecting your property. An apology and offer to pay to replace them would be what a person of good character would do, in my opinion. I would let it go, however in the future never loan to her again.

She is wrong. Anyone who gave a damn would protect the books with some type of water proof cover. And if she wasn't a jerk, she would have waited for you to answer the door or pick another time. Maybe she could have texted you BEFORE returning them? You are definitely not wrong, I would be furious.

I agree with @Ruth n Jersey. Her duty was to return them to you, not just to dump them where someone could take them, they could get rained on, etc. A late-night text doesn't accomplish the proper communication. She could have waited until the next day.

IMO, she owes you. But considering her responsibility level, I don't know that she'd see it that way.
