Who Knew? Some Fun Facts

Weird-Random-Facts

Is this really true? Sounds a bit farfetched to me. 🤔
Having experienced -60 F I can believe it. At those temperatures air is quite dense, and usually still and inverted (colder on the ground than above), sound can carry very well. And the moisture in your breath would freeze almost instantly, I never saw it "fall" but it might have. And freezing rivers can make booming sounds at temps not so low.

@NorthernLight lives in a place almost that cold.

Though a pure, unadulterated whiff of outer space is impossible for humans (it’s a vacuum after all; we would die if we tried), when astronauts are outside the ISS, space-borne compounds adhere to their suits and hitch a ride back into the station. Astronauts have reported smelling “burned” or “fried” steak after a space walk, and they aren’t just dreaming of a home-cooked meal.

The smell of space is so distinct that, three years ago, NASA reached out to Steven Pearce of the fragrance maker Omega Ingredients to re-create the odor for its training simulations. “Recently we did the smell of the moon,” Pearce says. “Astronauts compared it to spent gunpowder.”

Allamandola explains that our solar system is particularly pungent because it is rich in carbon and low in oxygen, and “just like a car, if you starve it of oxygen you start to see black soot and get a foul smell.” Oxygen-rich stars, however, have aromas reminiscent of a charcoal grill. Once you leave our galaxy, the smells can get really interesting. In dark pockets of the universe, molecular clouds full of tiny dust particles host a veritable smorgasbord of odors, from wafts of sweet sugar to the rotten-egg stench of sulfur.

Fascinating stuff, RR. Who knew????

Where some of your salt products come from and what does that have to do with why Flamingos are Pink?
Pink Flamingos Bonaire.jpg
Not a great quality photo but these are pink flamingos feeding in one of the many man made salt ponds that are farmed on Bonaire, an Island in the southern Caribbean. Salt production is a big industry there and the method used, simply put, is flooding large flat areas of land with sea water then letting evaporation take place due to the intense sun and frequent winds. This reduces the moisture in the water supercharging the salinity of remain water. The process takes approximately 12 months before all water has evaporated and the remaining salt crystals are harvested. In the meantime, brine shrimp thrive on algae and bacteria that grows in the salt ponds and the flamingoes in turn thrive on the brine shrimp. The rhodopsin pigment in the bacteria growing in these salt ponds is concentrated in the shrimp, and is in turn absorbed by the flamingoes, resulting in their brilliant pink plumage. Who knew?

Mountains of harvested salt waiting to be loaded onto cargo ships:

The harvested, unrefined salt is 99.6% pure salt and is not small grains but large crystals of salt.
Here's a pic of 2 salt crystals beside a pea for perspective:

What does Report mean?
You mean “Report” that you see at the bottom left of a post? If so, that's to report a problem with a post. If you click on it, a little screen will come up asking you “Report reason” then you type in whatever the problem is. The administrator will look into it and, if deemed necessary, he will delete the post.

Thank you for explaining it to me. I saw it today on someone's post and I didn't know what it meant. The person whose post it was on was a really nice person so it got me upset.
