Who Knew? Some Fun Facts

The 1959-1963 television sitcom, The Many Loves of Dobie Gillis was the inspiration for the animated cartoon, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? They based the characters on the sitcom.

The handsome and heroic Freddie Jones was, of course, patterned after Dobie Gillis, who was played by Dwayne Hickman in the TV series. Bob Denver’s beatnik character, Maynard G. Krebs, was the inspiration for Norville Rogers, better known as Shaggy. The brainy Zelda Gilroy, played by Sheila James Kuehl, was the model for Velma Dinkley, and pretty Daphne Blake was inspired by Thalia Menninger, played by Tuesday Weld.

I suppose we could say Bob Denver, who played Maynard G. Krebs on the "Dobie Gillis" show, was a typecast actor. Before things loosened up in the U.S., he was busted twice for possession of marijuana. (RIP Bob.)

The number of Hollywood and music connected people who were popped for pot and much harder drugs is astounding.

My favorite story in that realm:

Robert Mitchum was rather famously arrested at a party in 1948 for smoking a joint and spent two months at a Los Angeles County prison farm (plus some probation). I always loved how dismissive he was over the incident...

Upon his release Mitchum told reporters, "Jail is like Palm Springs without the riffraff. A great place to get in shape, only you meet a better class of people."
