To you, they may have been dumb idiots, but those buildings did get built and done well. Safety issues were less important than bringing home a decent pay check.

Disagree. Safety issues are always important. Not only for people working on the building, but also the ones that will be using it. Following safety directions to prevent injuries and death is more important than collecting a paycheck. You have to be alive to collect one. What would they're wives say if they knew that their husbands were doing such insane things? Look at the picture from the Empire State Building. Who wouldn't get red faced angry seeing a family member doing such a dangerous stunt. They should have been fired as soon as they came down.
