Whom would you nominate as your personal greatest hero! Family excluded!

I cannot choose just one but I think the true heroes are not famous. They are the ordinary citizen who jumps into a lake to save a child or maybe a dog, the cop who throws himself into the path of a speeding car to push an old lady out of the way, the man next door who goes to work in a job he hates to feed his family, the mom who cleans offices at night while her children sleep, ordinary people who are doing what they must do in order to do the right thing.

I've known a lot of heroes. Maybe you have too.

Edited to remove family per the title.

Princess Diana for female hero - who used her Royalty status for charity work by helping the homeless, brought compassionate awareness to the HIV / AIDS epidemic, helped bring a ban to the manufacturers of field mines, helped the disabled as well as children . She used her charm, beauty, eloquence, and warmth for benevolent purposes. She was the people’s LIVE Princess

And a male friend of mine who became my personal hero. šŸ’•

A very thoughtful and true reply, @Myrtle ! What would we do without our everyday heroes. They inspire all of us and spur us on to do a bit better!

I have a couple:
Jack Dempsey, because they asked him why he kept getting up. He said, "Because I'm hungry!"
Theodore Roosevelt: "Far better it is to dare mighty things,"
Maharishi Mahesh Yogi: "The purpose of life is the expansion of happiness."
Ralph Emerson, Henry Thoreau, Johanne Goethe, Albert Einstein, President Grant; There's more than a "couple", I guess!

Speaking of Jimmy Carter being liked, even by political opponents! Have you ever switched allegiance to your party, when voting, because you liked the opposition's candidate? I did a few times in my life! And let's keep it fairly neutral so the posts don't get banned as being too political! :)

My personal hero is Jimmy Carter. He’s spent his life in service to others. He is truly a good man.
Ditto. I like Jimmy Carter best for those reasons but I don't believe many would consider him a hero like I do in the traditional sense of the word. So I guess George Washington, FDR and Winston Churchill would qualify if JC doesn't. But I still like him best.

I have no party allegiance, I always vote for the candidate I think will be best.

Sometimes I have registered under a party name, both Republican and Democrat, when I needed to for primary voting. Right now I'm a registered Democrat only because a friend was running for Congress and I wanted to vote for her in the Utah primary. Never changed the registration, but it means nothing to me.

Jimmy Carter
The beach house we lived in while in North Florida had been visited by Jimmy a number of times, long before we bought it. We got it from the widow of Jimmy's long time lawyer, from even before he became famous. Always wanted a picture of him in the house but she passed before we could get one.

She told us a number of Georgia governors had been to the house. It was their second home, a vacation/party house. The only relic she left for us was a Lester Maddox signed alarm clock... Maddox was certainly no hero. Picture below is one like ours, did not keep it long. If you don't know who he was that's probably for the best...

An interesting choice, and a good one. Something unique about him is that it seems to me even those who did not like him politically mostly admit he was a good man. Not sure we've had another president in my time that's true of... Maybe not any politician, can't think of one.
I wholeheartedly agree.

I do that all the time. I don’t have an allegiance to a party.

Einstein is also one of my heroes... Bob Einstein, that is, otherwise known as Super Dave Osborne. He was one hell of a stuntman!

Here is one of his incredible stunts. Skip ahead to about the 2:15 mark to skip the interviews.

RIP, Super Dave.
