Why Can't Men Wear Dresses?

I never really liked or understood it until we started watching Queer Eye. Jonathan Van Ness is just so damn funny and unapologetic that he changed my mind. He was badly bullied in school and sexually abused and has come back from it by becoming famous and popular. He frequently wears dresses and I find him to be an inspiration for anyone that has gone through trauma and has come back from it.

"why would others judge your negatively for it".
Because, at least in our current society and culture, their opinions and judgement about the subject are conventional.

When I co-owned a liquor-grocery-convenience store in a small mountain town in Northern Calif, one of our regular customers was a young man who wore long, flouncy skirts during the summer. He wasn't gay, or any sort of exhibitionist or justice warrior, he just didn't like sweating his danglies off all summer.

One day he brought a couple quarts of 30W motor oil to the counter and proudly told me the W stood for "wankers" and that a wanker in mechanic-talk is "an increment of viscosity."

I asked him, "Who told you that?"

He said, "A mechanic explained it to me."

And then I asked him, "Where you wearing that skirt at the time?"

On the one hand, I thought the whole thing was pretty hilarious. But on the other, I found it very cruel. And after I explained what the W actually stands for (winter, basically), he found it cruel as well. He felt hurt, and rightfully so.

Oo! That's a great color on you.

@VaughanJB
The thread post asked "Why can't men wear dresses"
Of course the answer is they can & do.

The end of your post you asked another question

"Why can't a man wear a dress and be as accepted as if he were wearing pants?"

Can you provide examples of where not being accepted is a written rule.

i wonder if he means wear them without being made fun of.
Could be.
But when I see Arab Leaders in their formal attire and they aren't business suits like the ones in this video the idea that men can't dress in other than pants just doesn't seem right to me.. At 2.55 into the video there are quite a few walking around not in pants.

Society and social media, for the most part, have set the current standards for people when it comes to dressing ourselves up. The rule we are inclined to believe is that even something as simple as clothes should be sorted out by our gender if you want to fit in with the “right” standards set by modern times.

However, there are always people who go against said stereotypes by keeping their outlook in life open and free as they go out of their way to experiment with their looks and clothes, expressing themselves without looking to fit in the with current “norm” and by just being who they want to be regardless of society’s opinion on them.

You could take stereotyping one stage further.
Why can't men wear make-up?

they do. some wear eye liner to make themselves look punk or goth. i think some people from different areas aren't used to seeing these things because it's not as widespread. so it's weird.

@seadoug ... as a masculine man who happens to be Gay...what's your views on this topic ..oops sorry just seen your post ^^^
Thank you for thinking of me in any case. ❤️

Yes, I am a masculine gay but I as I've gotten older I've realized that there are many "shades of gay" and they should all be embraced.

In the old days, there was a saying amongst gays... "no fems, no fats, no Asians". Fortunately I had never heard that and I met my Filipino partner 32 years ago.

How could anyone pass up this handsome guy? He is my soul mate.

Neither one of us wears dresses but for any man who does, to each his own.

He’s a handsome fellow for sure. Look at that smile. ♥️

Okay, so a thought after reading the Towel Thread. (New Towel Skirt fashion for men...)

Seeing a man in a dress is.... jarring. I'll say, for me, but I think for others too.

I want to ask - what is so bad about a man wearing a dress? It raises eyebrows, it sparks concerns and scorn. But really, does it really matter? And why does it matter?

Why can't a man wear a dress and be as accepted as if he were wearing pants?
Every person should do exactly what they want, be who they are and don't worry about what anyone else thinks. As long as you are not hurting anyone live how you please.
