He accosted Sara Hudson when she arrived at her destination to celebrate her 22nd birthday. He forced her to drive to an ATM and withdraw $700. He then raped her, shot her in the head and set her vehicle on fire. Almost two years later he was offered a plea deal for a minimum of 30 years in jail instead of the death penalty. Ms. Hudson's family supported the plea deal. The only reason I can fathom is that they are opposed to the death penalty. Sometimes the justice system is broken.

A District Attorney usually goes for the maximum conviction and sentencing that the available evidence can get. Perhaps a plea deal of 30 years was a safe move, rather than risking a mistrial, acquittal or possible appeal that might overturn a conviction.

In cases like this, I always remind myself that executing someone is usually far more expensive than imprisoning him for life due to the endless appeals that typically occur before execution can proceed, with the prosecution and the defense and court costs all being funded by the taxpayer.

OED, it may be he plead Not guilty initially. Maybe the deal was, if he plead guilty, they would drop the death penalty specification. A trial may not return a guilty verdict? This way, he's toast with no butter.

Yea, plea deals are essential to the Criminal justice system, the courts are backlogged already. As we say, this dude has a Guaranteed sentence.

And from the pictures I saw of him, he's not that old, so he's looking at a large chunk of his life that is going to be spent in a cell.

He deserves every second of pain and agony he's in for.

This is why I prefer to see perps of horrific crimes get a long minimum sentence or ...better yet... life without parole. It's a horrible way to live out the rest if one's years and there's no media attention, crazy people fan clubs, all the other attention and hoopla that death row inmates get.
