Why do people have to abuse children and animals?

Sometimes I can't sleep because I worry that somewhere a cruel person is mistreating a child or helpless animal; those that can't or don't know how to ask for help. People I tell this to say I am too sensitive. How can I cope with my feelings?

You can't solve the problems of the world by yourself and worrying about it won't help anyone - especially you. BUT... you could perhaps do little bit to help yourself and them by volunteering some of your time helping a chartiable organisation that supports 'vulnerable' children or mistreated animals.

Debodun, If everyone would just keep an eye on two or three kids, (maybe in you neighborhood or even your church), those children will have a better chance of NOT being molested. If you suspect anything inform someone you trust. If you KNOW of some child being molested call CPS, but only if you know for sure, CPS can tear a good family apart.
If animals are your concern, contact your nearest "rescue" operation. Most animal control center have only a short period they can keep an animal before they have to put the animal to sleep. Rescue operations love volunteers. :thankyou:

I agree with Ina and Captain. I also hurt whenever I hear horrible stories and thank my parents all the time for being good parents. I make sure I am a good parent and I always tell my son to be a good father and husband. We can only do so much to help this world. Evil seems to be part of it no matter what.

Buster's Law isn't being very effective. I guess a law is only as good as it's enforced. Police and judges around here don't seem to think animal cruelty is a big deal. Hardly a week goes by where some animal atrocity is reported in the newspaper and adds that the the judge lets the perp off with a warning. In case you aren't familiar with Buster's Law, it was enacted in 1999 in New York State after some kid poured gasoline on a cat and set it on fire. It made animal cruelty a felony instead of just a misdemeanor.

The things that stress me out is reading or seeing or hearing about animal abuse. It makes me where I can't sleep. I think this is why I am such a hermit. Don't be around life, I won't see it, hear it, read it. Except online. Which is why I never post or go into pet threads. Someone ALWAYS has to share a horrific story about an animal that was abused. In a pet forum. No thanks.

To avoid a paralysing distress it is sometimes necessary, as previous posters have said, to focus on one small part of the problem. Do what you can in your part of the world using what ever resources you have available. Then pray. The whole weight of this problem is too much for any one of us. Pray for calmness of mind and strength for your actions. Then you will be able to do your part, along with the many others who feel the same as you do.

While we were taking our Izzy to and from his three cataracts surgeries, we met a lady that puppy set for a recuse operation when they found new puppies. She said the hardest part was giving them over to the new families that the organization found and vetted.
It saves a lot of puppies that would normally die from lack of care, and diseases that the older dogs might transmit to the little ones.

They abuse these children/animal BECAUSE THEY CAN.

The penalties are not serious enough to make those think twice before they do it again.

They do this because THEY themselves were somehow mistreated or abused...even though to outsiders, it may not have seemed that way. I have seen people struggle to overcome the affects of this, and some are successful. No, it doesn't work like: well, they know what it felt like, why would they do it then??!! ... its a reaction, I believe. And some people are simply born in a way that seems to make 'determination to be improved and better' an easier thing.

Several weeks ago, I yelled at a lady who was really abusing her small terrier dog...I threatened to call both animal control and the cops... she was totally taken aback... several times after that I saw her in the coffee shop and something about her 'reached me' and as if I could see her pain and confusion. I regret not talking to her nicely...so I learned a lesson from that.
You don't 'war' to make peace...

They do it because there are many evil people in the world, and children and animals are weaker, smaller and easier targets for abuse. I used to watch shows like Animal Precinct, where they have case after case of abused pets and animals. I get very angry and depressed, feeling so sorry for them. One reason it's so much easier to like animals over people.

There are probably many reasons: mental illness, dysfunctional childhoods, anger issues, and some people are just wired abusers. I belong to a rescue group for Toy Fox Terriers and Italian Greyhounds and it absolutely breaks me heart how someone could hurt this tiny, innocent, loving creatures. Abuse of the innocent breaks my heart, too.

I can't even bear to watch those shows or the SPCA commercials where they show abused animals in shelters.

Me either. So sick of news stories like the following .. this was yesterday!

Hope the dog is doing okay..? ... at least the owner went to jail.

It happens way too often ... On hot summer days, when the temperatures are in the 90s and up, idiots leave their kids and animals locked in cars.. and they can be dead in a very short time.

Child abuse is absolutely terrible and one can only suppose the perpetrators are either mentally ill or evil. No one should be intentionally cruel to animals but at the same time they should be treated as the species they are, and not pampered as surrogate humans.

there are quite a few animal progs on tv such as the Rspca and also relating to abuse of dogs, cats, donkeys, tigers, the list goes on, I switch channels as soon as I see one as I just can't watch the abuse without feeling both angry and upset
