Why do some people act offended when offered help?

I'm short.
I have no problem asking for help if things are above my reach.
Usually I ask a clerk if I see one nearby.

I find that suggesting an idea or change, goes over better than,, "let's go it this way".

Short also ... and I learned to always take a walking cane with me into the store.
It has helped me get items off of high shelves many times ... (not glass jars!) lol

People tell me that I'm "independent". I think I'm just a stubborn old coot. Also, I'm 77, with white hair and in a wheelchair, so I get lots of people trying to help me. Some of them won't take "no" for their help. I had one woman take my groceries from my cart and put them on the checkout counter, when I told her multiple times that I did not need her assistance. Some will ask to help, but go away when thanked, and "no, I'm OK". I'm grateful they ask, but I do get a lot of helpful people-too many at times.

I don't know what it is, but they have to help and won't take no for an answer.

I'm always offering to help, be it a friend or a stranger at the store. I can't remember ever having someone react with hostility, sure people have said "no" but that doesn't mean they are angry I offered.

I'm not saying it couldn't happen though, but it also wouldn't ruin my day.
