Why I Don't Go To The Senior Center

Locally, I've stopped twice in my lifetime, at the senior center. Both times I had a cup of coffee, a few folks were pleasant and said hello. Finished my coffee and left. An experience, neither good nor bad.

My wife's never been. We've tended to be "loners" throughout our long life together and are surrounded by family which I would assume would lessen the need for "company".

When wintering in Florida for many years, we did have lunch and browsed through the second hand shop at a senior center but again found no need or wish to mingle with other folks.

There are several older peoples' clubs not far away but, I could never imagine going to one of them. One of my friends has actually volunteered to help at one of the clubs and apparently the membership age starts from 50 and some of their members are over 100 years old! I think it is a lifeline for older people, especially disabled people or those who are alone. Maybe if I live to be a ripe old age and find myself alone, I might be tempted.

I think one of the reasons the older section looks like a bunch of grey haired old ladies trying to smile is that it lacks men.

The lack of grey haired old men may because they probably aren’t alive. Statistics.
When I first started attending Silver Sneakers classes at the gym I was the only man in any of the classes. Many of the women were widowed, some had husbands that were content to stay at home and sit on the sofa all day and watch Gunsmoke until they died...

My work was organising outings for people who lived in aged care or group homes where people with disabilities lived ( they are picked up and usually taken to some sort of activity daily ) SOME OF IT IS in my eyes a money making racket because some days were spent in the shopping centre food courts
or ten pin bowling alleys, swimming pools and parks / or botanic gardens, some would say oh it’s a nice day to take so and so out …little did they know it’s a money making racket ( in some cases ) cause the people who were taken to such venues had little or no interest in being there .

For the last few years we’ve had a National disability scheme Introduced and it’s in the process of being investigated due to the routing / fraud of the system blowing the estimated costs out by billions
where theses money being handed out by the government theres criminals .

We filled in diary’s each day what we did for the days outing …in most cases it was far from the truth ..

One example of the NDIS rorting is a man we know who has …..cerebral palsy, decided he wanted to learn to drive , so a driving instructor was organised for him ( $1000 an hour ) OK he had quite a few lessons in a special car with hand controls ( he can’t stand or walk unaided )

Next was getting a car so he can learn to drive his own hand control car ….so after a dozen more $1000 an hour driving lessons he gets his learners permit .
He decides on a huge van type of car so he can have it converted to a ramp /wheelchair lift / turning seat so he can shuffle into seat to drive ….OK cost to NDIS ..$60.000 + to convert the car / van and you know what ….the car sits in all types of weather deteriorating and not used 12 months latter ..utter waste of taxpayers money in just one example, this man is to afraid to drive he hasn’t got the strength in his arms / hands to operate the controls
and never will , he’s coming up 40 years old.
I believe the car itself cost around the $50.000 mark then it was the cost of converting it as mentioned up,here ^^^

I suspect some as confusing (day care activities ) with community centres or what some call senior centres

Wow, that would pay for a lot of Uber fare...
Exactly … @Nathan and that’s not all , his parents are friends of ours ….and a NDIS ****rep recently came out to their home to assess the man’s, let’s call him Jack‘s shower alcove , the ndis reps cost to come from a town 32 km away for a one hour visit…$1.200 to measure a shower alcove nah ….not the cost to make alterations

I'm almost seventy and do enjoy the Singing group at my Seniors Centre. The Art Drop In is pretty good too, as you bring your own project and work on it while chatting with others - painting, drawing, etc. However, the crafts group (knitting and crochet mostly) - very boring, well, to me anyways.

Something you can perform that will have your grandchildren talking for years:

Yes, they'll never forget that little white truck that takes you away!

I haven't been to the new senior center here yet even though it's just down my street. I don't really like being around a lot of people these days and prefer one on one get togethers and conversation. I did call there and the social worker said she comes to homes too. I've had so much on my mind I really forgot about the place. I may ask her to come to my apartment to sign me up for the Senior Center and its services. I believe there might be something I'm interested in.

The men who come there are likely to get their share of attention from multiple women!!

I belonged to one for a while. I didn't see anyone just sitting around. There were a variety of classes. The instructors were from the local community college. Those who were not computer savvy had the chance to learn. There was art, music, language and lots of special events. Also fitness rooms and and a pool for water aerobics and volley ball.

makes me laugh, they've rehearsed for a long time without doubt.. and are putting their all into recreating MJ's Thriller Zombie video.. and the oldies won't let anything keep them from their sandwiches...:ROFLMAO:
A lot of we "ancients" don't have to act to recreate zombies. It becomes our natural movement and appearance, at least in my case!
