Why I Joined This Forum

I am a extrovert with broad interests and a curious mind. I enjoy reading about what my peer group is doing and thinking. I don't seek agreement on any of my posts but have a need to express myself on many issues and I confess to being a sometimes POT STIRRER. My extremely poor & uncorrectable hearing has made social intercourse most difficult for me and this and other forums is a good substitute. I have enjoyed the Forum and really get a kick out of the labels that some of you pinned on me because most miss the mark by a wide margin, however, pot stirrer is accurate.
 

Good Lord, I never think about why I joined, or labels. Nothing so profound.

To me it's it's a bit like going into a bar, you think, "They seem a nice bunch of people" and you diffidently join in, quickly finding out if you fit in or not.

Just as in a group in a bar, some of them are real idiots, and some of them feel the same way about me/ That's what life's all about!
 
Lon, I just want to say that I am glad that you are on the forum, and on my Friend's list. Yea, I have been critical of many of your postings, but I hope you don't take personal offense, because I do respect you, and your right to speak your mind.
 

It would be a pretty dull world if everyone agreed on everything. Besides, someone has to present opposing and controversial viewpoints so as to keep all the "politically correct" on their toes.
 
Aside from being a 'pot stirrer' Lon, I think you're a pretty good egg! Glad you're here with us! :yes:
 
We may not always agree on things, but at least you are respectful to those with opposing viewpoints. Always good to someone who creates interesting threads for us all to participate in.
 
Don't worry Lon. I too can be a pot stirrer on certain topics that I know others would rather I didn't mention.
However, as long as posters remember our manners we can profit from listening to all the voices.

This is what I included in my initial introduction to this forum

I like to argue. Where everyone seems to be in agreement I will either move on without comment or I might just start arguing a contrary viewpoint but I always try to respect all viewpoints and especially try to respect the person expressing something with which I disagree. When I get to know people more and feel they know me I can get rather cheeky. In Australia we call this "being a stirrer". Stirring is something of a national past time so be warned. The stirrer expects the stirree to respond in kind. It is a kind of verbal tennis and it never matters who wins. It is the game that matters, not the end point.

Aha! Thought so! You are way too intelligent to believe some of the things in your posts. There are, however, people that actually do. It makes it easy for someone like DT to fan these flames and create a big fire. Believe me. Trust me. I know how. When someone continues to say these things again and again it is because they want you to believe their lies. You know, Lon, it's not such a bad thing to stir the pot once in a while as it helps to get us thinking. I think everyone has the right to voice their views. We need a right and a left to make this country function as a democracy but we need those that truly care enough to be truthful and do what's best for the country not just their respective parties.
 
Oy, that I have always felt we should agree to disagree. I hold some not so popular opinions meself and that's quite alright. I goof on you needing your prune juice, but we all do some days don't ya know???:eek:nthego:
 
I probably joined expecting more I.T. and computer discussions and problem solving...must admit a bit disappointed as majority of post are games and more games,just not my cup of tea and a waste of time,but as most seem to enjoy so be it:(

I hardly ever do the games, there are a lot of other forums here too if you don't go by the recent posts thing.

You can block games from your feed. Before I did it looked like the entire forum was majority games. You can block any area you are not interested in, including politics.

same here , very disapointed in the types of discussions and emphisis on games . i like financial discussions but between the games and types of discussions when they do happen there is much that interests me here

I don't do the games at all. I'll post how to block them. I normally go to Quick Links - Today's Posts. Otherwise if you only go to New Posts you will miss posts you may have replied on.
 
retirement planning strategy's , investing , better ways of using the various financial products and tax strategy in retirement . i also enjoy discussions on the latest research by pfau , kitces ,blanchett to name a few

There is some of that discussion here - especially Lon. But you'd do better on a forum that is all Americans. This forum has members from several countries, including me, and taxes, etc are different here, as well as not having to consider healthcare costs.
 
we have the same varied group over at the early retirement forum (founded by the creator of firecalc ) . but there is such an active forum on those subjects that you can't even keep up . by the minute discussions are posted .

over the years i would say 75% of all i know came from that forum . it is some of the most financially smart people who are soooooo knowledgeable in the area of retirement planning and structuring that you can find on the internet .

i found bogle heads okay but their thinking is to narrow as they are basically vanguard and indexing and little else is acceptable to them . not my cup of tea .

i like sleeping with the enemy , getting in their head and learning the side of things i am against . my opinions have totally flipped on things once i really learned the opposing view .

And it's all US based advice on retirement, right? Although the majority here live in the US, there is still a sizeable number of Australians and British and a few from elsewhere.
