Because he had small feet. I watched a documentary on his life and he had his feet impressed in cement somewhere in Hollywood and one actress made the remark how small his feet were for a man so tall. Makes sense.

I just Googled it and he wore a size 9-1/2. That is small for someone 6'4"! I wear a size 11 and I'm 6'1". I'm not sure that small feet would make someone walk funny, though.

I always thought that sort of sideways sashay was a theatrical or stage technique.

I’ve noticed that Broderick Crawford, William Talman and others had a similar style of walking in various movies and television programs.

It was an asset back then to have a style that set them apart from other actors. Look at Humphrey Bogart, for example. I doubt he'd be a successful actor today, but back when uniqueness was a virtue, he and many others with unique looks or speech patters, he was popular and even considered attractive. John Wayne, was also unique in the way he talked and walked.

A lot of actors and actresses spoke with a Transatlantic accent, which was kind of a merging of elitist American speech with a British accent. Carry Grant, Kathrine Hepburn, and many other spoke with a Transatlantic accent.

Today, everyone just want to be pretty, or so it seems. The pretty people are the only ones who matter.

John Wayne walked funny??? Never noticed ;) Ha! Maybe it was the challenge of walking in cowboy boots. Bought me a pair for work, wore them once. Took em off within a few hours, thought the front of my legs were missing! Somebody got a good deal at the 2nd-hand store.

Thank you. I always wondered what that Katherine Hepburn accent was called. I knew it wasn't exactly British but I could never put a name to it. Transatlantic!

For me growing up, John Wayne was the best actor ever! His persona was a big part of what I liked about him. He was my all-American guy, someone we all could hope to be when we grew up. I still watch every movie I can find with him in it...
