Why Tipping Feels Like a Scam Now

To Insure Prompt Service.

I dont have food delivered. And pay the delivery charge and a tip, too?
For a long time now, service staff feel entitled to a tip, and one time a server kept my change without asking me. Another time I was overcharged because the previous day I didn't leave a tip on a cup of coffee.
I would have steam come out of my ears...they wouldn't forget that day if they did that to me...

I have the choice to tip on deliveries and usually give the same amount each time. It isn't large but I think it is a nice gesture for me. The people who come to my door are very helpful and nice.
the people that deliver groceries here are also super nice, and very helpful. They bring the groceries into the kitchen, even put them away for you, if youre not able.... and they're not permitted to accepts Tips

I'm sure some do it anyway.. but its actually forbidden by the supermarkets for the drivers to accept Tips... so they could get sacked if they're found out

I am a tipper if the service merits it.

The kids at the drive thrus get enough 💩💩💩💩 thrown at them from the customers and their supervisors. I am pretty sure they have a lot of days when they wonder if there is enough money in the world for them to get up and go to work but they go to work anyway.

I usually tell them to keep the change plus a dollar because that’s about all I can afford.

Even though this was not a tip, it was something I wanted to do. Yesterday at the grocery store the young man, who was young enough to be my grandson, got all excited when he saw my bag of soft pretzels. He said he didn’t know they had them in the store. I said there’s one more left back there if you want to run back and get it before it’s gone. He said he would, except he didn’t have any money.

after I checked out, I rolled my buggy back to the deli picked up that last bag of soft pretzels, brought it to his checkout line gave him the money for it and said put those under the cash register until you go on break. I said no if answer butts. For all I know, he has a whole lot more money in his savings account than I do, but it didn’t matter.

I don’t really care who likes my attitude. I try to do right by these kids and I try to pay some things forward in this life that I couldn’t when I was young, even if my money is short. I believe in what goes around comes around and bad attitude is not one of those things I want to come back around.

that makes no sense whatsoever... someone has got their wires crossed... tips are for good /exceptional service, not for pre-service...
And it gets weirder.. I happened to see a forum for "gig workers" a few years ago, and some were saying they have access to all the information about orders before they accept an order, and if they think the 'tip' isn't high enough they don't accept the order at all!

Thanks Rae, that's better... I can see the picture now when I click on it, but it's still very small.. what is it exactly ?... :)
I am on the wrong thread. The photo is a dark sunset, it is one I copied off an avatar site. The ones I tried to put on were from my photos. Too big I guess. Sorry, I posted it on here.

Murrmurr, your post intrigued me, mostly because I was under the impression that most of our prescription drugs come from China. My impression was incorrect. I did an AI search, which is difficult to judge accuracy, but here's the response:

APIs are the chemical components that make a drug work. Their origin is even more concentrated abroad.
Where the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) come from
  • India and the European Union are the largest API producers for U.S. medications.
  • 12% of API volume is made in the U.S.
  • China contributes about 8% of API volume, but is a major supplier of key starting materials used to make APIs.
So, If you’re holding a typical U.S. prescription bottle, the odds are:
  • The finished drug was made in India (if generic) or Europe (if brand‑name).
  • The API inside it likely came from India or the EU, with China supplying many of the raw chemical building blocks
I didn't research much further than this one AI query. However, I believe the reason that medications are so expensive here is that the pharmaceutical companies may be influencing our legislators. I'll use just one drug as an example, Insulin for diabetics. This drug is widely available, and has been for decades. I attached a chart showing prices in various countries. Moreover, Since insulin has been in mass market use since 1923 I don't think there many research issues or safety issues requiring ongoing testing and research. I believe that we pay 4.6 times the next highest payer to support higher profits for the pharmaceutical companies.

Yes, some whole drugs and ingredients to make drugs (compounds) are imported from China. Compounds are shipped to US compounding laboratories/factories. There are American employees of US drug companies living in China who regularly inspect the Chinese factories and test their products for purity, quality, cleanliness, etc., and to make sure they are not violating any FDA regulations and all that, and then everything is inspected and tested again after the products get to the US.

The US began importing drugs and drug compounds from China soon after China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001. China sells that stuff cheap, and when American drug companies realized significant increases in profit, that it was cheaper to buy from China than to manufacture in the US, quantity of those imports exploded.

And, of course, there were side-effects.

US compounding factories closed, 100s of 1,000 of American jobs were lost, businesses the workers supported shut down, and the cities where those factories and businesses were located lost all that tax revenue and went to shyte. The classic Detroit Story.

And when the quantity of any import explodes, the quality of the inspections suffers, severe backlogs happen, mistakes are made, and China takes advantage and starts shipping stuff they shouldn't...like fentanyl and opiates.

90-MINUTE DINING EXPERIENCE
Las Vegas used to have low cost buffets that were pretty decent to eat. Now this is the way most buffets are. The expectation is to be in & out in that time.

Brunch ($42.99)
Monday - Friday | 9AM - 2PM
Saturday - Sunday | 9AM - 4P
with tax the total is $92.97

The min. tip suggested is 18%
@ 18% the total for two people would be
$109.70

The tip is for a server to ask what you want to drink, then bring you what you want.

We get that one comped but don't eat there every time since it gets boring. And truth be told the menu really sucks.

It's no wonder Las Vegas is losing tourists.

I have never heard that expression... here anyone who does work on behalf of another company but are independant are called freelancers...
"Freelancer" and "independent contractor" are generally used here to refer to professional occupations; "gig worker" is more along the lines of DoorDash, Instacart, etc. (e.g., minimum wage jobs that don't require much training).

surely no-one can spit on your food, if they don't know whether you're going to leave a tip or not yet....

I think all restaurants everywhere in the world would go out of bbusiness if waiters were spitting in the food because no-one gives them a tip...lol
Hi HollyDolly, no, I meant if you go back to the same restaurant and did not leave a tip the first time, they could spit on your food before serving you in retaliation. Also, if you ordered a pizza and did not give the person a tip, they might spit on your food to retaliate. There have been instances on the news about this.
