Why Virtual Assistants Freak Me Out

But those don't help you with managing your life to the extent the PAs do.
I'm confused tbh Deb.. I have had VA's in my home for several years now.. so I'd really be interested in what you think they do to manage people's lives.. aside from a reminder..a timer.. giving me the news or listening to the radio, and turning my lights on and off...

I think it boils down to the fact that some people just love their gadgets and always want or have to have the latest thing. The more toys the better. I have no objections to others enjoying their toys or becoming dependent on them.

I also understand that virtual assistants can be of help to those who are disabled. In that case, I don't regard them as toys.

Either way, it makes no difference to me why people use them. I simply choose not to depend on them.

Not sure why people think that these gadgets make someone lazy. My ancestors, if they could pass judgment, might think I am lazy because I switch on a kettle when I want a cup of tea. They had to chop wood, light a fire, and fetch water from a well.

Man, do I ever feel like a lazy slob now. ;)

No, I don’t have or want a VA right now. I do realize the value for me or my husband if/when health deteriorates.

Actually getting up and turning on or off lights might be that little bit more that our bodies need. We’re always being told we don’t move enough.

Isn't that like saying you can trust the government? :cautious:
:ROFLMAO:
you know what really bothers me most about these assumptions throughout all of your kitten-scratch play biting antics is that...

you're always making up wrong answers, then slamming me with them in the form of a question...

...and i really don't want to be put in jeopardy ⁉️

This is my take on the Alexa fetish, too. A few of my friends think having the latest technology is cool, but they also have lazy tummies from not needing to get up and get moving while home.

Not that is giving me something to think about.....how about finding a friend or two with two legs, and a desire for some human interaction face to face?
I don't get on with humans!

My LG TV is doing something weird lately. I'll turn it off for the night and about 30 seconds later it turns back on for just a few seconds with a big LG on the screen. Then turns off again. It didn't use to do that, and it doesn't do it during the day if I turn it off. Just at night before going to bed. It's kinda creepy.

Do you use virtual assistants? I won't... I hear too much negative/scary, but if you have good stories about them, I'd like to hear those, too. What got me thinking about this was a few other conversations here where people were saying they talked to friends, even on a landline, and immediately started getting ads, etc. for what they talked about... and wondered who was "listening." Could it be Alexa or another virtual assistant in the room if the conversation wasn't through a mobile device?

The day I knew I'd never have one was when I was talking to an old friend about 5 years ago. He lives alone without close neighbors. He was sleeping one night and heard his Alexa say "I'm sorry, I can't do that"... the house had been totally quiet. Too creepy for me.
At this time I do not have that technology(in my home).

😨 That very thing has been something I've had dreams about since I was a teenager... that I'm getting ready to go somewhere and every time I try to leave, the TV comes back on after I turn it off. It's creepy enough in a dream, it would be so much worse for it to actually happen!

I love technology !
I know that they are most likely listening and tracking us , or could be if they wanted to do that; but I believe that if the government (for some unknown reason) wanted to track what I am doing, they would be able to do it whether I had a Virtual assistant or not. So, I just enjoy what I want and do not worry about it.

That being said, I do not use a virtual assistant, and I hate it when the one in my Chromebook comes on unexpectedly, and turn it back off. It only did that when I was setting it up after erasing it, and now it behaves again. I have Siri turned off except for in my Apple Watch. I use Siri there, and totally am glad to have her.

If I need to make a phone call with the watch, I can just ask Siri to call whomever I want to call and it happens. Should I have an emergency, like falling down, or passing out for some reason, Siri would use the Apple Watch to notify my emergency contacts and also call 911 emergency for me if I was unable to do so.
Just knowing that I have this safety factor with my watch is worth the whole thing to me.

If I had it set up for turning the lights on and off, I think that I would like that as well. Learning about new technology is a lot of fun for me, and even if i do not have the latest things, I love watching videos and learning about the new tech stuff.

Wow. I am confused. I think there must be a misunderstanding. I have known JaniceM for years
and have never known her to use the tactics here described. She is a seeker of knowledge, a straight talker, not a passive aggressive troll.

just a slip from awareness, i suppose... the post was just part of the process to address my feelings from my perspective. my observation was that the excitement of interaction just let her take things too far.

when that was posted, the process had already taken it's course and just needed to be expressed. rather firmly, i realize, but also to let those who want to take the challenge know.

i usually find myself laughing into slumber about the silly shit i post but last night tested me so... though everything is so much better after a cry.

group hug... yes that includes you too @JaniceM. you may not realize it but you are really helping me teach a lesson there (albeit to myself.)

firm yet funny, if only it wasn't so serious... oh well?

Growth hurts, but the rewards are priceless. Hugs to you too.
