Why you don't enter Floodwaters

Even in more southern latitudes where crocs are non existant, flood water can contain submerged trees being carried down stream by the current. People who enter flooded rivers can disappear and their bodies may not ever resurface because they are caught up in the branches. Most cars get caught in flood waters when they attempt to drive over flooded causeways or bridges. It doesn't take very deep water to float a car.

In July, 2025, there was a “hundred year flood” on the Guadalupe River in Kerr County , Texas USA.

Camp Mystic, a summer girls camp, had sat alongside that river for many years.

During that flood, 27 people lost their lives and I believe, to date, one little girl is still missing.

Even though the river rose in a blink of an eye, They had no earlier warning and I believe cell signal was poor, even someone did have a cell phone.

I don’t live in Texas, but those who live in Hill Country feel more could have/should have been done in advance. The pictures shown on TV were devastating when one knew that most of the lives lost were children and one still hasn’t been found.

The story is all over the internet if anyone wants to google it, I’m not posting it…….

As far as people driving through high water —- our news media & meteorologists repeat themselves adnauseum to “turn around don’t drown”, yet there is always some moron who will try driving thru deep water anyway And sure enough, they call screaming for help as they are sitting on the ROOF of their vehicle. It only takes six inches of water to float a low profile car like mine.

I lived most of my life in south and central Texas. Flash floods were common.

My father was the civil defense director for our town. He had access to retired military equipment. The Guadalupe River ran through the town and flooded whenever there was a long or hard rain. Dad would take the Duck (an amphibious troop carrier) to the flood area and rescue the people who lived in the flood zone. I clearly remember one night, I woke up to find the lights on in the house and Mom was up. I asked her where was Daddy? She said, "He's rescuing the people who are being flooded."

People would drive through the flooded areas, then need rescuing. The cities would put up road barriers but they would drive around them. Then the city started charging them for the rescue. Thousands of dollars. I don't know if that helped stop those idiots.

I wouldn't even trust going into flood waters here in an American city. I know I wouldn't in Australia.
I once went to Baton Rouge. We wanted to go to a park. This was before internet, so I looked at a normal map. Ah look! It's green there. That must be a park. Lets go there. An American woman who overheard us said: Those are swamps with alligators. I'm glad that she warned us.
