I have seen the wild horses running a few times down at Assateague Island between Maryland and Virginia. I admire horses. They are regal animals having a mind of their own and the most important thing about horses is that you can’t make a Western movie without them. Will never forget seeing wild horses run across the road in front of my car when I was out West. It's one of those once in a lifetime thrills. Magnificent animals.
I kind of remember a similar TV news story about the horse from that island in the East. People got wild horses free or dirt cheap, and most of them wound up in processing plants, just as fast as owners could unload them.
What do you think the right thing to do would be? As you say they are not a native species and without many predators are over populated. Not a simple problem to solve...I don't believe is the right way
The same situation in Canada. Unfortunately they don’t look like the ones in the movies. Many have deformities. There was a time when cowboys & ranchers could buy some. There were tight restrictions. Some lucked out and got some potentially very nice horses. It did thin the herds and helped the situation.currently in the western US there is an over abundance of the wild ones
Not sure how practical that would be, and it doesn't seem to control the feral cats much, not around here anyway. But it did make me think, we have a similar problem with wild hogs, actually a much bigger one. They are also non-native invasive and can be destructive. The way they are generally managed is through unlimited hunting, most places you can kill or capture a wild hog with little regulation, no seasons or limits. And no cost to the government. Why not do the same with wild horses? I suspect you would find folks interested in helping thin the herds. I know horses are cuter than pigs, but otherwise the situation seems similar to me.what do humane societies do with feral cats?
