Wild horse slaughter

Seems to me the government should keep their hands off and let the horses free roam. Obviously, adopting them out to unknown farmers and other people hasn’t faired too well for the ponies. The free roam horses should be protected from anyone attempting to snag them for the purpose of selling them to a slaughterhouse. If a private individual wants to pick one up for training, Ok, but be careful. These horses have that wild pony bred into them.

Will never forget seeing wild horses run across the road in front of my car when I was out West. It's one of those once in a lifetime thrills. Magnificent animals.

I have seen the wild horses running a few times down at Assateague Island between Maryland and Virginia. I admire horses. They are regal animals having a mind of their own and the most important thing about horses is that you can’t make a Western movie without them.

the horse that is native to north america found in fossils stood about 3 ft or so in height. the current horse is not native to north america, but is a descendant of spanish mustangs brought here from europe. currently in the western US there is an over abundance of the wild ones and like the bison or other wild animal needs to be culled back but giving them to people for slaughter I don't believe is the right way.

what do humane societies do with feral cats? capture fix em and release, no more kitties and they still live out their lives. but the allowing of citizens to be paid to take the horses and then sell them to slaughter houses is not the right way. and no it is not a simple problem. and if I had the quick and easy answer I would not be posting on this forum either!!!!

The same situation in Canada. Unfortunately they don’t look like the ones in the movies. Many have deformities. There was a time when cowboys & ranchers could buy some. There were tight restrictions. Some lucked out and got some potentially very nice horses. It did thin the herds and helped the situation.

Not sure how practical that would be, and it doesn't seem to control the feral cats much, not around here anyway. But it did make me think, we have a similar problem with wild hogs, actually a much bigger one. They are also non-native invasive and can be destructive. The way they are generally managed is through unlimited hunting, most places you can kill or capture a wild hog with little regulation, no seasons or limits. And no cost to the government. Why not do the same with wild horses? I suspect you would find folks interested in helping thin the herds. I know horses are cuter than pigs, but otherwise the situation seems similar to me.
