Wildlife pays a visit

I've only seen a few in my community, but black bears are increasing in CT.
Here is an email I got the other day from my condo assoc.:

Greetings to All,
Our office was notified this morning of a bear in the community seen yesterday at the dumpster near units 57-64.

Please make sure the dumpster sliding doors are secured/closed.

Please exercise caution when walking within the community and review the information in the link below carefully.

CLICK HERE for the Do's and Don'ts regarding bear safety from the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, DEEP.

All owners are urged to properly store trash in receptacles and review helpful tips from the DEEP.

Thank you.

Cool fox pic. I know there's all kinds of critter running around after dark. In winter, there loads of paw prints all over. We are becoming deer central. The deer are everywhere, there's two munching grass in my yard now. They are so used to us that when we drive up, they just stand there looking at us. They may be cute animals, but they are eating anything green. We used to have wild blue berry bushes. The deer have eaten them, and you can see way into the forest, because they've eaten everything.

Clearing out the undergrowth could be beneficial if Summer wildfires come your way.

Supposedly the problem is the health of the forest. By the 1850s, there wasn't a tree left in most eastern US states. So our forests are all about the same age, the deer are preventing the forest from rejuvenating, by eating all new tree growth. Sooner or later, all we will have is dead trees.

In Ohio, the bag limits for deer can vary year to year and from county to county depending on the population. Hunting is something that needs to be done to maintain a balance. Two other problems from too many deer are diseases (chronic wasting disease now a big one) and car/deer accidents.

I've always dreaded driving during the rutting season having come close to several accidents on all types of roadways when they come out of nowhere.

The worst accident I remember was in the late 80s where a deer went through the windshield of a car with six people inside, 3 in front & 3 in back. The middle passenger, a 20 yo girl, took the brunt of it & passed away several days later.

thats better lovely thanks - remember us oldies need prompts and clip on lines and night vision specs??
